Recently, I have been studying and writing about Jesus and the journey he leads us on. As I go, he is giving me object lessons in my own life.
It's amazing how you can forget the simple things, at times. I find myself in the middle of a project he has assigned to me - writing about how Jesus makes disciples.
I'm at a point where Jesus teaches his followers to Listen attentively to God; and I find myself struggling to be a good listener. So, I had been asking the Lord to show me what I need to change, to be a better listener. And what I needed to do to make progress and complete this project.
He gave me three instructions:
1. Be quiet.
2. Ask for guidance, then wait.
3. Obey what you are given.
Simple right? Well, I got my answers with some additional insight: He showed me that Nehemiah's work took time and diligence in times of adversity. Nehemiah had a lot of distractors and detractors.
One of the things Nehemiah had to do was determine to KEEP pressing forward and not listen to the voices of discouragement. Every day, every step. He had to make daily steps to what he already KNEW God had said, no matter what someone else said along the way.
Often times, life requires us to have the faith to obey a word we have already received; despite adversity and situations that hinder or discourage us. Many times, we want a new word. God says: "I have already spoken" and then he expects us to obey what he has already said.
Well, he patiently reminded me that he has already given me the word. I need to press on and not allow myself to be distracted. Thank God that he is so patient with us, right? Thank God that Jesus walks with us, even when we don't want to walk this journey.
Well, maybe you are needing encouragement to know that God has given you a word and he will give you the strength to complete what he has spoken to you. Keep listening, but keep pressing forward with what you have already heard. God will speak again, when you have done what he called you to do already.
Verse for the moment:
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path." [Psalm 119:105]
