All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

5There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.
1 Corinthians 12:5

Me to You

At the beginning of this week I read this obituary that had been posted on my bulletin board for awhile now. Thinking nothing of it I took it off the board and began to read. I was shocked. I was thinking of an obituary, you no, the ones that are in the paper that read about someone who has just passed away. It gives you dates and such. Well this “obituary” was not that at all. I found myself laughing and thinking, “this is great!”

The obituary read, “SOMEONE ELES. Our church was saddened to learn this week of the death of one of our most valued members, Someone Else. Someone’s passing creates a vacancy that will be difficult to fill. Else has been with us for many years and for every one of those years, Someone did far more than a normal person’s share of the work. Whenever there was a job to do, a class to teach, or a meeting to attend, one name was on everyone’s list, ‘Let Someone Else do it,’ Whenever leadership was mentioned, this wonderful person was looked to for inspiration as well as results; Else was among the most liberal givers in our church. Whenever there was a financial need, everyone just assumed Someone Else would make up the difference. Someone Else was a wonderful person; sometimes appearing superhuman. Were the truth known, everybody expected too much of Someone Else. Now Someone Else is gone! We wonder what we are going to do. Someone Else left a wonderful example to follow, but who is going to follow it? Who is going to do the things Someone Else did? When you are asked to help, remember—we can’t depend on Someone Else anymore.”

Now if your thinking what I was thinking when I first read this, we are both on the same page. Wow! This was a very bold statement, but was very true! Do I depend on someone else to do what I should be expected to do? I no many times when the faith promise weekend comes around or something going on in our youth or children’s ministry comes, I just sometimes blow it off and let someone else pick up my end. Why not, Someone Else will do it right?

Well, if we didn’t get the memo on that one, Someone Else died, and now it’s up to us. Jesus didn’t let Someone Else go to the cross for Him, He went for us. He didn’t just say let someone else do it, or take on that discipleship problem right now, No, He stepped up and out and did it for you and me. We can’t expect someone else to do what God has called us to do. He has a plan and a purpose for us and not for someone else. If God expected someone else to step up, He would never have moved. God counts on us to do what He needs us to do. We are here for Him, not for me or you or someone else, but for His works. Remember Someone Else passed, it’s your turn!

Today’s Prayer

Jesus, thank you that you went to the cross for us and that you didn’t let Someone Else do it for you. Please help us to realize that we might be all that there is in a moment. To walk in faith and to do your works. To follow you with a full heart and not with Someone Else in mind. I love you so very much and I thank for your blessings and for the things you will lead us through—and not Someone Else. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Questions for Thought

Do you expect Someone Else to do what you need to do?
Is there a time when you just let Someone Else do your works?
When were you Someone Else?
Have you done work in your church that Someone Else was supposed to do? How did you feel at the time? And how do you feel now?
