A man went to a Catholic priest and told him he wanted to get serious about his relationship with God. He was surprised when the priest invited him to meet at the local swimming pool. When asked if he was really serious about longing to grow in his relationship with God, the man said 'yes', and the priest plunged the man under the water and held him down. Just when he came up desperately gasping for air he pushed him under again. Finally, when this had happened several times, the man still trying to draw breath, hears the priest say to him. ‘When you as desperate for God as you are desperate for air, like you are now, then you will begin to grow as a Christian.’
That is the cry of David in Psalm 42 – “As the deer longs for the water, so my soul longs after you…” So what can we do? What moral issue, or obedience issue so we need to face up to? What is the theological issue? What is the knowledge issue? What are the issues that can only be dealt with as we commit to a serious daily reading of the Word of God?
