There are 9 supernatural gifts of the Spirit, ‘one of which is Speaking in Tongues’. Whether or not the BAPTISM of the Holy Spirit is a separate event, usually accompanied by the outward evidence of being able to pray in tongues, or whether this supernatural gift refers to the Holy Spirit coming into a person’s heart at the moment of salvation, and that the work of the Spirit is complete at this point of salvation, I believe that this subject should not be a dividing issue within the body of Christ. We should each individually desire and even covet all of the gifts, and the Holy Spirit will give to each one, as HE chooses.
1 Corinthians 12:7
(NLT) ‘A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.’
(KJV) ‘ But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.’
The Bible says that each of us gets a gift, and that we should covet these gifts, and ask the Holy Spirit to work in HIS power through us, to accomplish HIS Will, and bring glory to God? The Holy Spirit gives these supernatural gifts as HE decides what each person should have! We have all been created for a special purpose, to serve in Christs’ Body, and we must keep our vessels clean, for HIS purposes.
Verse 11
(NLT) ‘It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides what each person should have.’
(KJV) ‘But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as He will.’
Verse 13
(NLT) ‘Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit.’
(KJV) ‘For by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.’
Verse 12
(NLT) ‘The humans body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ.’
(KJV) ‘For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ.’
Verse 25 & 26
(NLT) ‘This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other. If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honoured, all the parts are glad.’
(KJV) That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another. And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured all the members rejoice with it.
Verse 31
(NLT) So you should earnestly desire the most helpful gifts. But now let me show you a way of life that is best of all.’
(KJV) But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet show I unto you a more excellent way.’
1 Corinthians 13:13
(NLT) ‘Three things will last forever – faith, hope, and love – and the greatest of these is love.’
(KJV) ‘And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
