They are coming Home. Thanksgiving, 2014.
Happy Thanksgiving.
This is a unique year … three of my four children are up and out of the house, but will be coming home for Thanksgiving. Wait, wasn’t it just yesterday, that I was ten years old, running down the stairs in my big old Colonial Revival home with all of the smells of Thanksgiving already under way in my mother’s kitchen? And I was the youngest of four children, waiting for each of them to arrive! Time goes by.…

The religious were blind. Matthew 3.1-12; Luke 7.24-35
Hi.
When John saw the sanctimonious Pharisees and Sadducees1 coming out to the desert, he blasted them, calling them out for their outward piety, while their hearts were unrepentant. Their garb identified them and their position but it also helped them maintain their religious pride rather than seeing their sin. It seems…

The Baptizer - Wild and Woolly. Matthew 3.1-6
It was long ago in a galaxy far, far away … or at least it seems that way. The speaker followed at least three others who came out with rather splashy multi-media presentations, Power Point illustrations and statistics, and frankly kept my rapt attention. It was more than 10 years ago now. And then came one. He came out with a simple stool and a smallish black Bible—that’s all. Mostly, Erwin McManus talked…

Growing up Jesus.
Howdy.
As a classroom teacher, it was an exhilarating feeling to recognize when I had a brilliant student sitting under my tutelage. Even as I type, various young faces come to mind with their inquisitive minds, probing questions and keen insights. These were the students who really kept me on my toes, endeavoring to answer their questions, and keep a challenge ever before them. Can you imagine being the teacher or rabbi teaching Jesus in the little…

The Trinity – beautiful community. Matthew 1 – 2
Several nights ago, I went to mass in New York City’s theatre district at St. Malachy’s Church, which actually refers to itself as The Actors’ Chapel. The beautiful old church, built in 1909, is wedged between theatres and restaurants. In the evening worship service, the priest even offered prayers for those in the entertainment industry—which, when you think about it, is a…
