The quake struck at sea, and is 50 kilometres (31 mi) WNW of Padang, Sumatra, Indonesia, 225 kilometres (140 mi) SW of Pekanbaru, Sumatra, Indonesia, 475 kilometres (295 mi) SSW of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and 960 kilometres (600 mi) NW of Jakarta, Java, Indonesia.
