Freedom from legalism.

One issue that has always overwhelmed me is that of legalism. I know that in Old Testament days, the Jews were required to follow all of God's laws down to the proverbial "T", and if they didn't, they were endanger of death. The only atonement for sins back then was the prescribed sin offering before God, (which was only a temporary atonement.) I could have sworn that I accepted Jesus Christ into my life; I mean, I know I confessed with my mouth and believed in my heart. So, right then, the holy spirit should have entered my life, right? HELP ADVICE NEEDED!

I have a friend who has been in prison for the last 2 to 2 1/2 years. She has 3 daughters ages 11 (almost 12), 13, and 15. She just recently got to talk to them for the first time in over a year. She was suppose to be getting out in about 4 months but I got a letter today saying she has been kicked out of treatment and is in the hole.
