My story with God
I was abandoned by my parents as a baby, and raised by grandparents who took me to church (a church really high on guilt and low on grace). I walked an aisle when I was very young, mainly because my mom wanted me to and I was scared of going to hell. In my mind, God was this impossible-to-please person who was going to come back one day and take away the only parents I knew (i.e., abandoned again). In my church every year all the young people would get "rededicated" at church camp. It began a process of two steps toward God and three steps away. In my late twenties/early thirties I told God that I'd leave him alone if he'd leave me alone, and I proceeded to just about destroy my life. Fortunately God didn't keep his end of that bargain. I am at the place in my life that I want my faith to be more than just verbiage. I want the real, life-changing and amazing transformation that Jesus promised. And to have that, I know that I have to give up control of my life and let him lead me. That's a hard thing for me - to say I have some trust issues is an understatement. But God is slowly showing me he can be trusted, and I'm learning to let go. I've asked Jesus to be my Lord and Savior, and I'm waiting on him to see what he's going to bring into my life. In the meantime I'm spending time in his word, praying and seeking to connect with other Christians.
