My husband and I set up the Sunflowers Charity after a visit to India where we observed at first hand the poverty relief work being carried out by Martin and Beena (Martin is a pastor) and were very impressed by their dedication and very practical expression of love and care for the poor and underprivileged in their community. Out of the little they have they give everything.
The need in India is great as there is no official welfare system in place. This means it is common place to find children and widows living on the streets without the provision of basic human needs and being abused in many ways.
Martin & Beena have two orphanages, an outreach to people suffering with aids - giving food, medical care and shelter, providing uniforms etc to children in the local community so that they can attend school. We also hope to set up a home and place of safety for women who have been rescued from the sex trade and a hospice for those dying alone unwanted and unloved.
100% of all funds raised by Sunflower go to the Indian charity. We do not take anything for administration or running costs, we pay for things out of our own pocket. We have to date provided; food, bedding, cupboards, cooling fans, paint, washing machines, clothes, toys, school fees, school uniforms - books - footware, building maintenance etc. Yearly school fees and uniforms alone for just the two orphanages cost £2500 - $5000.
Because I have been unwell and unable to do what I normally do the children didn't get any toys last Christmas. I feel very bad and upset about that. The need is very great and the commission in the sight of God the Father is to visit, help and care for the widows and orphans in their affliction and need (James 1 v 27) If we don't who will?
We have also become involved with Toccata Musical Productions set up by a paediatrician who works in the neonatal unit here. This group of singers and musicians travel to areas of need and put on a wonderful very professional show. (the cast includes professional singers and musicians from the West End). They involve street children and orphans who get to take part in the show - can you imagine what that does to their self-esteem!!!! Toccata get no money and provide their own travelling expenses which Dr Paulraj attempts to raise through sponsorship. All monies raised go to the local charities in that area. Please check out their website.
Every blessing
