Reagrding your specific question

A person does receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit at salvation. He comes in and marks us for salvation (Eph. 1:13-14; 1 Cor. 1:22; 2 Cor. 5:5). There are varied views on the next point and I am expressing my understanding here. We do receive Him as the deposit, but are not filled with the Holy Spirit and therefore are not empowered to live out the Christ life until we come to the point of Sanctification. Sanctification has two aspects to it. There is a moment of crisis when we recognize that we cannot do this on our own. We recognize we are saved. We recognize taht something is missing in our lives. We recognize that we have been attempting to live for Him by our own efforts in our own strength. There is a moment when we ask for Him to come in and empower us, that is to sanctify us. This empowering time is a true yielding to the lordship of Jesus in our lives. The second aspect is that it is also progressive. Meaning that the crisis opens the door and we are filled with His Spirit, but now it is a life long journey. It is not I am filled for life, but that I am being contunually filled and that I am continuing to grow as I live in Him and for Him. This is a very brief response to a very deep and important subject.
