MEMORY VERSE: Luke 5:30: But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?
Matthew Henry sees the grace of Christ throughout this text, He writes: "It was a wonder of Christ's grace, that he would call a publican to be his disciple and follower. It was a wonder of his grace, that the call was made so effectual. It was a wonder of his grace, that he came to call sinners to repentance, and to assure them of pardon. It was a wonder of his grace, that he so patiently bore the contradiction of sinners against himself and his disciples. It was a wonder of his grace, that he fixed the services of his disciples according to their strength and standing."
In the face of such grace, the scribes and Pharisees gave themselves to faultfinding. They murmured... questioned... grumbled.
Rejection of light brings greater darkness. In the very presence of Christ, those complainers found grist for their mills. And those who are seeking faults are sure to find them... to their own satisfaction... and to their own destruction. Christians in America are privileged people. Churches abound. Bibles are available to all. The Gospel goes out over the air and is printed in millions of tracts and books. God has been good to us. To be given to murmuring and complaining... faultfinding in the midst of such blessing is similar to grumbling about the disciples in their service for Christ.
Would you have been comfortable as a Pharisee?
Would you have fit in among them?
Disciple or Pharisee? Which are you?
Put away your Pharisaic faultfinding and follow Christ today.
