“Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
Jesus Christ, according to the Scriptures, is the only one through whom any member of the human race can be saved. We have seen that the grace of God is the only effective means by which any human being can be delivered from the wretched state of sin and death. Jesus Christ is the embodiment of the fullness of the grace of God for the deliverance of mankind from sin and death.
In introducing Jesus Christ, John points out in John 1:14: “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” He further states in John 1:16-17: “And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”
Jesus Christ did not come to head the Jewish religion or the Western Christian religion or any religion for that matter. Jesus came to deliver the world from sin and death. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved” (John 3:16-17).
There are many religions in the world. Most, if not all, of these religions, including Jewish and Christian religions, represent the sincere efforts of mankind to worship God, do what is good, and obtain forgiveness for their sins. Nonetheless, as we noted already in the case of the Jewish and Christian religions, man’s best efforts in seeking God for deliverance from sin and death may be sincere but wrong if it is not done according to God’s revealed way.
Paul summarizes this truth very well in his lamentation for the salvation of His fellow Jews in Romans 10:1-4: “Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.”
The grace of God that brings salvation extends to all men of all languages, nations, and tribes. And wherever people come to receive that grace of salvation it is, according to God’s plan, always through the hearing of the Gospel and the revelation of Jesus Christ as their Saviour and Deliverer from sin and death.
What all people, who sincerely seek to know God, need is to find God’s way to Him. Jesus plainly declared: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). All of us must ensure we are not seeking to establish our own righteousness and way to God, but have submitted to God's righteousness by grace in Jesus Christ, who is the only Way.
Father, I thank you for extending your grace of salvation to all of mankind everywhere. I pray that the Gospel which reveals your grace in Jesus Christ for salvation continue to spread to the ends of the earth. And may those who hear be humble enough to lay aside their religious and self-righteous ways and accept Jesus Christ, Your only way, for their salvation and deliverance from sin and death. Amen.
