All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

What was the classical meaning of “WE CANNOT LEGISLATE MORALITY” and how has that meaning undergone a drastic metamorphosis? What does it mean today?

There has been an unfortunate tendency in the modern church to downplay the importance of the intellect in the Christian life. However, to neglect the role of the intellect in the Christian life is to deny the command to love the Lord our God with all of our mind (Matt. 22:37).

We lose way too many kids in college, it is critical that we equip the youth and that we teach them the importance of thinking critically in the Christian life..

I will be brief on this one. It is simple.
The original meaning of “WE CANNOT LEGISLATE MORALITY” is simply saying that Government can legislate moral laws, but those laws will not make folks stop breaking the Law. Just because it is illegal to still, that doesn't mean that people will stop stilling. in the contrary a law usually makes people want to break it.
It has now taken a whole new meaning and folks groan and scream that we shouldn't legislate morality, when 90 percent of our laws have to do with moral issues. Such as not stealing, not committing murder etc..
WE CANNOT LEGISLATE MORALITY was never meant to say the courts should not deal with moral/ethical issues for the majority of the laws have to do with morals/values and ethic, it was simply a statement reminding us that the simple fact that their is a moral law in the books, that does not mean we will obey it.
My people perish for lack of knowledge, says the Lord.

We need to first and foremost equip ourselves so we can inturn bless kids with wisdom.
In simple terms people can be ignorant and they think that the goodness in law cannot be enforced or incorporated into governmental force because "goodness" may infringe upon the liberty of an individual.
-creating boundaries of good vs. bad
-morality as unnecessary
-losing the value of being a good person
-thoughts of limitations if only allowed to do "good" things
-change can be negative if it is not done righteously in the goodness of the Lord

Sadly it is true that in some Churches, minds are not being challenged to think critically. If people were really concentrating on the love for God people would be able to understand so much more in life.
-for instance, everything I learn I relate to God and the goodness of God therefore I understand many things. Every question I see I relate to God and then I look at the word of God to see if there is truth. Sometimes God just tells me.

-Indeed I was lost in college and warped into so many different activities, so many different ideas and so much to learn in so little time. Yes Christian teaching is awesome :)

I hope that many of the people in the church that you attend are critical thinkers in Christ :) that way when Jesus Christ comes out they are ready to go out and spread the truth in all sincerity.
