WITH HIS STRIPES WE ARE HEALED.
In various prayer rooms I see people quote to others "with His stripes we are healed" when the "others" are suffering physically. I have done much research on this particular verse, in light of these various prayer requests and don't understand how one can quote this particular verse in reference to a physical illness.
Through my research, I have found that this refers to "spiritual healing" and can not understand the "physical healing" referral.
Any thoughts or comments?

While I was reading this morning, I came across a scripture that I think you should consider in your research on “does the verses in Isa. 53:4-5 pertain to physical or Spiritual healing?” While I was looking up references, it lead me to Mat.8:14-17.
I still think that the KJV should have read, “surely He hath borne our sickness and carried our disease” because that is what “griefs and sorrows” translate to.
If you will notice that Mat. 8:17 refers back to Isa.53:4,

I will definitely agree that Paul is a perfect example of the grace of God,
2 Timothy 3:10-12 (KJV)
10 But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience,
11 Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.
12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
It amazes me that those that study the Word of God, will not look up the definition of the Words being used, we normally do not speak with or use the Elizabethan English as used in the KJV. And will give us a varied understanding of the context.
When He used Isa. 53:4-5 and said that by who’s stripes ye were healed.
Why is it that we can’t let scripture interpret scripture, Look at the reference that is being used. Where does it refer you too? Matt. 8:17 Which says “That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses“.
I believe if you would study “Redemption” the “Sovereignty of God” and the “New Creation” and “who we are in Christ” and understand it, you will see what we were redeemed from, “For example” Deut. 28:15.…. Tells us what the curses or the “curse of the law” was, and then in Gal.3 tells us that Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law. He being made a curse for us. Jesus was the Sacrificial Lamb that was slain for us.
All due respect dear readers, from reading these responses, I believe the scripture 2Ti.3:5 plays a great part in this discussion.
Why do we need to be baptized in the Holy
Spirit, why do we need to have power and authority over our enemies, why did He say ye shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover. From what will they recover?
Why would He say whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Mat.21:21 and Mk.11:23 Mark 11:23-24 (KJV)
23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
24 Therefore I say unto you, What things so ever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
Is He just teasing us? Is He giving us a false hope? Is He lying to us?
Is the Word of God truth or just a book that will give us a feeling of false security until we die? Can we be sure then, that He is telling us the truth, when He said believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and ye shall be saved, What assurance then do we have that we have a home in heaven when we die? If we can believe in that, why can’t we believe in the other promises of God.
And as far as physical healing not being in the Atonement, What is the Atonement? Is it Isa.53:4-5,? Why even pray for the sick if you don’t know God’s will for that particular situation? How can you have faith, for anything if you don’t know what God’s will is for it? Do you not know that the Word of God, which we call the bible is His will? Both the old will and the New Will? Boy, I could go on with this, but it is getting a little long and I know I don’t like to read some of these long, drawn out responses. So if anyone wants to e-mail me and discuss this, you have my permission, At bcjoe@sbcglobal.net, I marvel how God gave His Son and gives us His Word and tells us that all the promises of God are in Him yea and amen, And if we be Christ’s then are we Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise. An heir of God and Joint heir with Christ Jesus. Also it will do all of you good to study who Christ is and was, and why He had to come to earth, if He could have just used His sovereignty, He would not have had to die on the Cross, Just by His Grace He could have saved us. By the way also add
“Grace ” to your study, and then you will see how God’s grace was sufficient for Paul. It is God’s grace that will deliver you from what ever situation you find yourself in, but you will have to know what grace is before you can have faith for it.

I agree that this refers to 'spiritual healing' rather than 'physical healing.'
We should always pray to ask that God's Will be done... and rest in His Sovereignty and Grace. God is in control...and that is enough!

Rita, this is where I am having trouble understanding how you and others come to understand that these verses pertain to Spiritual healing “only” rather than physical?
Help me out, because I believe as Children of God we all should come to an agreement as to what is truth, pertaining to them.
I am not here to argue the point and I’m sure you all are not either, I’m just trying to see if I am missing something that maybe I should know about.

and carried our “Sorrows:” ( = (ka'ab); anguish or (figurative) affliction :- grief, “pain“, sorrow) “These definitions are from the Strong’s Concordance”
yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are “healed“. (= raphah, raw-faw'; a primitive root; properly to mend (by stitching), i.e. (figurative) to cure :- cure, (cause to) heal, physician, repair, × thoroughly, make whole. )
#2. 1 Peter 2:24-25 (KJV)
24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
Now the only way I can understand your thinking, or where you are coming from, would be if you were from the apologetic doctrine.
Does anyone else have a comment on this that could shed a little more light on the subject?

First of all, I researched each word you used and find a spiritual meaning in each of them.
Sick can be spiritually or morally unsound.
Grief is aggrivated or angered state.
Then one has to consider the verses surrounding them.
1 Peter 2:22-25 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
Isaiah 53:Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all.
From my point of view, the most important "healing" that a person can receive is a spiritual healing that allows us to live eternally with God. The physical healing is a temporary thing and NO ONE survives it. (At least not as of now.)
As for physically healing, I am sure there are people who can lay hands on another and they are cured from some physical illness. But, to date, this has been a temporary healing. The only healing that is eternal is the spiritual healing that comes from believing in Christ as our Lord and Savior.
I think that context has much to do with this particular question, and it is important to see what the surrounding verses say about the subject.

Let’s start with a N.T. point of reference. Matthew 8:17 says the following, “This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: ‘He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases.’" This is a quotation from Isaiah 53:4. Isaiah 53:4 uses the Hebrew word “Choli” and is sometimes translated as infirmities, but most often refers to sickness or disease. The verse in question is Isaiah 53:5, but rarely does a verse stand on its own. It has to be read in context. These two verses are found within what is commonly called the “Servant Song” and is from Isaiah 52:13-53:12. This passage speaks of Christ work for us as the atoning sacrifice.
Let’s take it a step further. Isaiah 53:5 speaks in relation to spiritual healing. In fact, all illness is related to sin in some manner, for if the fall had never happened then sin would not have been upon the face of the earth and sickness would not exist. Our primary need is spiritual, but in the atoning work of Christ He has made available physical healing as seen in the fact that He carried our infirmities and diseases.
The question then must be asked is “Does this ensure that we will always be physically healed?” The answer is no in relation to this physical life. The promise of eternal life is not given in Isaiah 53:5. The method upon which sin is paid for is established. The Bible teaches in numerous other places that salvation is a gift. This gift is experienced through faith and repentance. Whereas healing is a gift but is not given as broad of a promise. There are factors that affect healing. These factors are 1) Faith. 2) Obedience. 3) God’s timing. 4) God’s will. I will post a separate article regarding these four following this posting.
It is God’s will that all should come to repentance. The offer of salvation is guaranteed to those who find Him in faith and repentance. Whereas we are told that it is appointed for man to die once and then judgment. God does not guarantee that physical healing will be acquired in this life. Faith alone is not the answer. It is critical if there is going to be a healing, but it alone cannot guarantee one will be healed. Sometimes it is God’s will to take someone home. Sometime’s God uses our affliction to help others as in Joni E. Tada. Life is not all about us.
Summary: There is healing available through the atoning work of Jesus as described in Isaiah 53:5 when we include the larger passage and put it in context. This healing is now available, but is not guaranteed in every situation due to several factors (See below article).

Does God Still Heal Today?
This is such a tough subject, not because of God, but because of what we see take place all around us. I am sure that we all know people who loved Jesus, prayed for healing and yet still passed on. Did Jesus fail them? What is to be taken from such an experience? What do you say to their loved ones when a miracle saves your loved one?
First, miracles are for today. Second, God is not at our beck and call despite what many teach. There are restrictions, or qualifications when seeking miracles. There are four points to ponder. They are Faith, obedience, timing and God's will. Too many put too much emphasis on one of the four, such as faith, and do not see them as working together. Others get the group upside down and simply claim that if healing did not come it was simply God's will. This may be true, but one must ask the tough questions first before resigning to the belief that it was God’s will.
A person must examine their faith, but faith alone does not assure God granting your request. On the other hand, a lack of faith assures that He will not grant the request as asked by the individual. A person must also look to their obedience to Him. It is true that we are saved by grace and that salvation is maintained by grace, but life in Christ requires obedience (with faith) in order to be blessed of God. How many parents bless disobedient children? If a person is sure that they have faith to be healed and that their life aligns with God's word, then it can be that the healing does not come due to God's timing or His will. He sees the full picture. God establishes in His word that there is a right time for everything. A miracle may be coming, but the time is not right. This is when we hold on and continue to pray seeking His face and trusting in his grace. There are times when a miracle does not come and we are left asking why.
What if you find your faith lacking? Pray that the Lord will increase your faith as you seek his face. What if you are out of alignment with His word? Ask for forgiveness and strength to live for him. Then take steps to follow His word. What if the miracle is long in coming? Ask for strength to face each new day and to be able to rest in Him. What if the time for the miracle has passed? Remember that life, whether 20 years or 80 years, will cease in the flesh and we, the believer, will be translated over into His presence which is the greatest miracle of all. This is a time when you must rest in His will and wisdom. Our response in such times must be "Lord, though I do not understand I accept your will."
Lastly, if you feel let down by God, express this to Him. Open your heart and ask the questions. Ask, do not accuse. He may give you the answer or may not. You can be assured that He will comfort your soul when you seek his face.

I agree that healing is not guaranteed, but...
Isaiah 53:5 has to be considered in context with Isaiah 53:4. Isaiah 53:4 is clearly defined by Matthew 8:16-17. Healing spiritually and physically are clearly in the context of these verses.
I will refer to my earlier comments above regarding the how and why one is healed or not healed.

Luke 10:27 He answered: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind' and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.
The New Testament is filled with so many incidence where Jesus healed people. Jesus and His desciples, Paul and Peter too performed so many healing miracles.
Jesus took the stripes on His back for us to be healed spiritually and physically and in every area of our lives. All of us have sinned and fell short of the glory of God, and because Jesus took the stripes on His back, we are able to love God with everything we got, He did it and we were healed at the moment we believe in why He took the stripes on His back.
