This is my first post, so bear with me. I have been in the dark, so to speak, for over 20 years, and it took my girlfriend/future mother of my children, cutting contact for 6 months, to start me back on the right path, but now I have no idea where to go. I live in a small town, pretty much politically run churches(the one I used to go to, railroaded our preacher, because he had back trouble.) Anyway, after all I've been through, I pretty much avoid all the hastle of public religion, and just worship alone, just me and the Man upstairs. I'm posting today because I am just now getting back into religion, and I am really unsure where to start. I dont even have a bible over here, I left it when I moved out of my parents place, and I dont really want them knowing I have discovered God, just yet. The rest of my family is kind of what turned me off of religion in the first place. So(stupid question,) other than online sources, how can I get closer to God(fellowship, mission work, etc...) without actually getting sucked in to the collective?

As others my have shared, it is a Relationship and religion that makes things happen. I would get The Word; a Bible as soon as you can, Faith comes by hearing and hearing the Word of God. religion never gets anyone anywhere. I am not slamming anyone who goes to Church and is apart of a religion. Yet, we all will discover it is a Relationship with Jesus that brings us where we need to be. I am a old long hair, who Loves the Lord; maybe you remember Jesus freaks, with hippyman I am guessing you may. Anyway Brother we are here for you, not many judge others here. We work hard at lifting up others. Let me know if I can do anything for you.

Hi Hippyman,
I saw your other post that you were back...so I wanted to welcome you. This is one of your posts from a couple years ago. I'm so happy to hear that you have been reconciled in broken relationships.. God is good, and HE's certainly in the reconciliation and healing business.
One thing I wanted to emphasize is, if you haven't already done this, then I believe that Christian fellowship is absolutely crucial for growth. It's important to discuss scripture together as Iron sharpens Iron, it's important to have support and give support spiritually and physically... You will get spiritual support here on AAG, but physical support can be given best in face to face relationships through your local church community. It's a 'given' that we are to study the word of God, but Christians don't always acknowledge the importance of face to face fellowship.. This is where we are truly held accountable and where we serve together in meaningful ways that cannot be done online. Please don't misunderstand me, I love this website...it's been an incredible source of encouragement and growth for so many people, but it is an appetizer which leads to the main course of being actively involved in your community when you are able. :-)
Blessings, Carla
