This is an important question.

However, I would like to see it rephrased.

Could we just please ask it like this instead "What is holy living according to Jesus standard?"

The Pharisees had a 'holy living standard' according to the 'bible' that we can easily justify and say that's how God wants us to live.

Luke Chapter 11:43-47
43 “What sorrow awaits you Pharisees! For you love to sit in the seats of honor in the synagogues and receive respectful greetings as you walk in the marketplaces. 44 Yes, what sorrow awaits you! For you are like hidden graves in a... field. People walk over them without knowing the corruption they are stepping on.”

45 “Teacher,” said an expert in religious law, “you have insulted us, too, in what you just said.”

46 “Yes,” said Jesus, “what sorrow also awaits you experts in religious law! For you crush people with unbearable religious demands, and you never lift a finger to ease the burden. 47 What sorrow awaits you! For you build monuments for the prophets your own ancestors killed long ago.
48 But in fact, you stand as witnesses who agree with what your ancestors did. They killed the prophets, and you join in their crime by building the monuments! 49 This is what God in his wisdom said about you:[n] ‘I will send prophets and apostles to them, but they will kill some and persecute the others.’

50 “As a result, this generation will be held responsible for the murder of all God’s prophets from the creation of the world— 51 from the murder of Abel to the murder of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, it will certainly be charged against this generation.

52 “What sorrow awaits you experts in religious law! For you remove the key to knowledge from the people. You don’t enter the Kingdom yourselves, and you prevent others from entering.”

53 As Jesus was leaving, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees became hostile and tried to provoke him with many questions. 54 They wanted to trap him into saying something they could use against him.

John 5

39“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me; 40and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life

"Watch out! Legalism is a silent killer, like carbon monoxide. It slowly and silently suffocates our spirits so we fall into a deep sleep and never wake up to the joy we share in the messiness of family life." ~Bruxy Cavey.

Blessings, Carla

Along with what Carla has said I present the following, your title and your subject speak of two different things. When talking about holiness there is positional and there is experiential holiness. The holiness that is required for us to see God is the positional holiness. Positional holiness is the holiness of Jesus Christ that is imputed to us at new birth when we are regenerated and given a new spirit. This holiness is dependent solely on Jesus Christ and His work on our behalf. Experiential holiness deals with living life in a manner that pleases God once we are born again. It deals with our choices while we still exist in the fallen flesh. This is part of what Christ is talking about when He tells us to crucify the flesh daily and to take up our cross and follow Him.

Holiness is what God is. Holiness is also His plan for us as believers. God’s expectations of His people come from His holy nature: “And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ Ex. 19:6. ‘You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.’ Lev 19:2.

The emphasis for holiness didn’t end with the Old Testament. It now indwells in the New Testament believer. For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them (our earthly fathers), but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. Heb 12:10. Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. 2 Cor 7:1. I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. Ro 12:1. and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. Eph 4:24. For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness. 1 Thess 4:7. Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord. Heb 12:14. Both Testaments state that only holiness will satisfy God.

Jesus is our representation of holiness. He continued to teach about God’s demands for holiness. “For I say unto you, that except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.” Matt 5:20.

The apostles also taught that holiness was in patient and loving service while waiting on the Lord’s coming. Peter said to follow God’s example of holiness in their trials: but as He who called you is holy; you also be holy in all your conduct 1 Pet. 1:15.

Paul speaks of holiness when speaking to those at Thessalonica: And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all, just as we do to you, so that He may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints. 1 Thess. 3:12–13.

The temple sacrifices that were practiced in the OT are now realized through the Son by the Father with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. We, as believers & saints, are set free so that we can become like the One who has freed us. It is His will that His own be like Him in every aspect.
