What Are the Marks of a True Disciple?

How to live for Christ, the marks of a true disciple.

 

Over the past 3 years much time and energy has been spent on AAG by many, including myself, debating whether a person is eternally secure or if they can lose their salvation. The discussion rages back and forth. People throw out their favorite support Scriptures. One accuses the other of not living for Christ, while one accuses the other of making salvation being based on works. In light of all this discussion I wonder, what does it profit the disciple of Jesus? How is one “truly” benefited by this discussion that will not go away? I am sure there is some benefit, especially to some, but most go away believing just what they believed to start and are as sure as ever that the other side is still wrong. What if we had spent all that time and energy on something a little different, say … “How to live in a manner that pleases God”?

 

If you wish to pursue the circular debate of eternal security vs losing salvation, knock yourself out. My challenge to you, and me, is that we focus on teaching people, including ourselves, how to live in a way that pleases God. I am sure that we will disagree here on some things as well, but I ask … “What are the marks of a true disciple?”

 

Note: This discussion is not to entertain how we can lose or not lose our salvation! This discussion is about following the path of God that pleases Him.

I am struggling to fully follow your post.

 

Have you married the man or waiting to marry him?

Did you lose money in 2009 and then again this month?

We were to get married on Feb 14 this year. He did not show up. My family and I decided to forgive him and move on with the realtionship. We were engaged. No I lost this month's salary.

You don't have to answer this question, but how does one just not show up for their wedding? Did he have a legit excuse?

 

If you have not married him, you are not bound to him. If there are enough red flags before the wedding what makes you think that they will go away after the wedding? Usually they intensify from bad to worse in such cases.

You did what you could. You shoudn`t take this matter personally.

 

1Peter 3:21 tells us," And corresponding to that, baptism now saves you - not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience - through the resurrection of Jesus Christ".

So, it`s an open, decalatory action of showing God and the world where our hope and faith are placed. Amen.

 

The relationship between this gentleman and God was his responsibility to secure. You can only do so much.

We don`t know where his heart was, but God knows all things.

I wonder what those ministers told him.

The mark of a true disciple is in1John2:20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things. v.27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him. 1John3:6 Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him. 1John2:29 If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him. 1John3:18 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. James1:25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does. 1John5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. Amen Brent McClellan,

You just echoed John 6-28-29: " Then they said to Him,"What must we do, to be doing the works of God?" (29) Jesus answered them "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent."

So, "believing in God" is not just an intellectual acknowledgement (as the demons do), but living a spiritual life, with faith and obedience, that is obvious to the world, and brings glory to Almighty God.

 

Keep on keeping on, Bro.

Anybody can be save when you believe first. Rom.10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. As long we true believers and followers of our Lord continue to do our parts by praying without ceasing to those whom you want to be save just believe they will be save in God's time as long you have also hope for hope. Heb.11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Rom.10:20 But Isaiah is very bold and says: "I was found by those who did not seek Me; I was made manifest to those who did not ask for Me."
