I remember hearing a sermon about how OT believers were also saved by grace and the blood of Jesus because it was retrospectively applied to them. It centred around a verse that I have forgotten, but believe is in one of the NT letters.
The verse was about how because of Jesus' sacrifice, God was just in saving people in the OT.
I can't find the verse. Does anyone know the one I'm talking about and where to point me to?
Thanks in advance,
Jenny

But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, Ro 3:21-25
? Maybe these?
Hi Jenny,
I believe the verse you are looking for is I Peter 4:6, "For the gospel has for this purpose been preached even to those who are dead, that though they are judged in the flesh as men, they may live in the spirit according to the will of God."
Not to be confused with I Peter 3:18-19, "For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just, for the unjust, in order that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit. (19) in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison."
Jen, I believe that Jesus, between Friday afternoon and early Sunday morning, went to the spiritual waiting place of the dead, and spoke to two different groups .
First, (I Peter 3:18-19) to the evil angels in the "bottomless pit" (7 mentions in Book of Revelation). The Greek term here is kerusso, to herald, proclaim, as a town crier. Jesus would have been proclaiming His paying the world's sin debt.
Second, (I Peter 4:6) Jesus preached to the righteous Old Testament souls who were waiting for access to Heaven. His shed blood freed them from their waiting place. Greek- euaggelizo, we call it evangelize, to announce good news, glad tidings.
Very important - Luke 4:18, " The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He appointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor, He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are downtrodden," (underlining mine). Jesus quoting Isaiah 61:1-2.
Now - Luke 7:22," And He answered and said to them, Go and report to John (The Baptist) what you have seen and heard: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have the gospel preached to them,"
Notice what JESUS HADN'T MENTIONED YET??? He hadn't released the captives yet............because it wasn't time for the cross at that point.
And how about Philippians 2:10, "That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those who are in heaven, and on earth, AND UNDER THE EARTH," (emphasis mine).
John 5:25, "Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear shall live."
This passage might fit in here. Matthew 27:52-53, "and the tombs were opened; and many bodies of the saints (holy ones) who had fallen asleep were raised; (53) and coming out of the tombs AFTER HIS RESURRECTION they entered the holy city and appeared to many." (emphasis mine).
Finally - Ephesians 4:8-10, "Therefore it says, "When He ascended on high, He led captive a host of captives, and He gave gifts to men. (9) Now this expression, "He ascended", what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth? (10) He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things."
All Scripture utilized in this post - from New American Standard Bible.
Jenny, hope this helps.
Grace and peace to all.
Thankyou, this brings more depth into this subject.
So OT believers were trusting in God for their salvation even though they didn't fully understand how God was going to secure it. And between his death and resurrection, Jesus proclaimed that to them. Is that what He was doing?
Hi Jenny,
Yes, I believe I Peter 4:6 describes Jesus freeing the waiting believers to go to Heaven.
John 14:6, " Jesus saith unto him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (K.J.V.).
So, by that statement, the only way anyone, past, present, or future can get to heaven is by His shed blood on the cross.
It's like getting a "Get Out of Jail Free Card"...............Only this pass is a "Get To Heaven Free Card", compliments of our Lord and Savior.
Grace and Peace.
