All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

Last night I needed to have some time with God to confess various things and talk to him about all sorts in general. The last few days have been a time of great closeness between God and me and yet also great distance; I couldn’t understand what I was missing as even though Jesus’ sacrifice restored my relationship with our Father there still seemed to be something I simply had not grasped yet. It takes time to learn, of course, and perhaps I had not been particularly patient with myself or God.

During prayer a thought came into my mind; it was of a father and his son and then me, a daughter, younger sister to this brother. I kept thinking of the way in which a child views their father and the way a younger sister might look up to her brother, the firstborn and heir to her father’s legacy.

Thoughts then came in that described how a young sister might react to her brother if he was made king and given complete authority by his father and the respect, awe and strong bond of love between brother and younger sister.

Throughout these thoughts I knew it was God the Father as father and Jesus as my older brother; despite the seven months I’ve had to learn this I had not honestly thought of our Father and Jesus in this way – yes, I’ve referred to our heavenly Father as Father so many times and yet it never clicked. I’ve never really known how I’m supposed to view God – viewing God as God is important, yes, yet there seemed to be something that I'd not realized or acknowledged in our relationship. Reverent fear and awe are there but when I would call God “Father” I would get this sense that I was missing something, that there was something I just wasn’t getting.

I’ve also never been certain as to whether or not looking at Jesus like a brother was “the right thing to do”; I know I love and respect him and now, after having such clear thoughts that make so much sense, it seems that this is how I should be communicating with Jesus – as the older brother, the firstborn, the heir to Father’s throne, the one who has all authority but is still under the jurisdiction of our Father.

Despite having read of our spiritual family in the bible my mind has still been closed, it seems as though God has determined that now is the appropriate time for me to begin to take this in properly and so I would like to thank God for his willingness to impart these thoughts and ponderings unto me; I’ve prayed for him to reveal scripture to me pertaining to these matters, I would also like to ask you all, if I may, if you have any scriptural references you would recommend to me so I can take this deep into my heart and apply it into my life.

I’ve come to look at all of you as brothers and sisters in a wider spiritual family, a bond of love that can never be broken, and yet I had not quite registered this with the One who gave us that bond in the first place. Praise God that he has seen fit to expand upon my knowledge and allow me to grow.

Lord bless you always,

Rachel

Here are a few along the lines you mentioned:

1Jn 3:1-2 NIV84  How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.  (2)  Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

1Pe 2:1-10 NIV84  Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind.  (2)  Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,  (3)  now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.  (4)  As you come to him, the living Stone--rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him-- (5)  you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.  (6)  For in Scripture it says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame."  (7)  Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, "The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone,"  (8)  and, "A stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall." They stumble because they disobey the message--which is also what they were destined for.  (9)  But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.  (10)  Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Col 3:11-17 NIV84  Here there is no Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.  (12)  Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.  (13)  Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.  (14)  And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.  (15)  Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.  (16)  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.  (17)  And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Eph 4:30 NIV84  And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Eph 1:13-14 NIV84  And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,  (14)  who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession--to the praise of his glory.

Rom 8:15-17 NIV84  For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father."  (16)  The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.  (17)  Now if we are children, then we are heirs--heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

Gal 4:6-7 NIV84  Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, "Abba, Father."  (7)  So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.

Joh 1:12-13 NIV84  Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God-- (13)  children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.

Lord Bless,

LT

For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of His government and peace
There will be no end,
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with judgment and justice
From that time forward, even forever. Is 9:6-7

Jesus gave them this answer: "Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. John 5:19

I and the Father are one." John 10:30

I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. John 5:43

No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known. John 1:18

I see LT also posted some Scriptures. Forgive if I've repeated any.

Hi Rachel,

Bless your heart for your keen desire to learn more and draw closer to God Almighty through His Son, Jesus Christ.

Let's start with Ephesians 2:10, " For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."(N.A.S.B.). Note Greek for "workmanship"- poyema, which means masterpiece.

God is patterning our lives through the Holy Spirit to be like Jesus.

Romans 8:29, " For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren;"(N.A.S.B.).

And, II Corinthians 4:4, " in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God." (N.A.S. B.).

Rachel, rather complicated.......Jesus is God (John 1:1) , but yet, it's through Him that we come to the Father (John 3:16), and John 14:6, " Jesus said to him,' I am the way, and the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father, but through Me." (N.A.S.B.).

I think it's o.k. to look on Jesus as an older brother as we grow in the Word, and be about the work in the Kingdom of God.

Hope this helps.

Grace and Peace.

You are welcome.
