All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

Some people claim the Sabbath is Saturday and some Sunday, and some don't know if either day is accurate but just celebrate it one one if those days. This of course is due to Exodus 20:8-11:

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

How do you see this in relation to Hebrews 4:1‭-‬11?

Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed. Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said, “So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’ ” And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.” And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.” Therefore since it still remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who formerly had the good news proclaimed to them did not go in because of their disobedience, God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.

Please provide Scripture with the absolving of the Sabbath and that any day is correct in being the Sabbath???

Love You, but still haven't heard back.....please provide Scripture.

Im not letting this go....nor would Jesus

No, Jesus only brings harmony to those who see His view.....very sorry.  I've had plenty of Scripture, reasoning......not quite sure what that means and no I have not let in.  I can't relax my friend, time is short.  I don't quite understand what you mean to knowing a spirit from its shadow??????  That's weird, sorry...have no idea.

No, I don't know your heart,  noone knows your heart except Jesus.  \

Love you too, hoping all is well with you.

The Sabbath is a mere shadow of what is to come.

Colossians 2

See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, [h]rather than according to Christ. For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, 10 and in Him you have been made [i]complete, and He is the head [j]over all rule and authority; 11 and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ; 12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 When you were dead [k]in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, 14 having cancelled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 When He had [l]disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through [m]Him.

16 Therefore no one is to [n]act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath [o]day— 17 things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the [p]substance [q]belongs to Christ.

Romans 14

One person [c]regards one day above another, another regards every day alike. Each person must be fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day, observes it for the Lord, and he who eats, [d]does so for the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who eats not, for the Lord he does not eat, and gives thanks to God. For not one of us lives for himself, and not one dies for himself; for if we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord; therefore whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died and lived again, that He might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.

10 But you, why do you judge your brother? Or you again, why do you regard your brother with contempt? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. 11 For it is written,

As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me,
And every tongue shall [e]give praise to God.”

12 So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God.

It seems to me that it is a matter of personal preference and/or conscience.  Each of us must be convinced in our own mind.  Be careful to guard against holding another person captive in law, such as the Pharisees once did.

Blessings, Carla

Amen

The Sabbath was also a "mere" shadow of what is, too.  Were adultry, murder, etc. also a shadow of what was to come?  Does the Bible say that anywhere????  What do you believe about the 10 Commandments Carla?  Do you believe that they stand for all time or that some of them are now non-existent?  When the LORD tells us to "Remember the Sabbath" and keep it holy as signs and marks that we are His, did he only mean it for a certain period of time?  Why in the New Testament did it still speak of the Sabbath and not tell us that the day had been changed to anytime?  Am I saying that we stop worshipping our LORD & Savior on the "regular" days, absolutely NOT, but what I am saying is that it is a command and we should follow it.  It gives man a day to remember all that the LORD has done for him and to Praise Him, rejoice in Him and follow Him.  Why such an adverse and repulsive response to those who chose to follow?  So much hatred for that or those that follow the LORD.  Even His mother Mary took respite on the Sabbath.

Nothing has changed, sorry, nothing Biblical anyway.    When reading the Bible in context you must read all of it and use all of it, not just select verses, this has led to so much pain and confusion in the Christian community that it pains me.

I'm so sorry Carla, I truly love you.

And please do not throw the Pharisees word around, look into why they were called the Pharisees.  They had many manmade rules and were burdening the people with those while being everything that they resisted.   Kind of like things are now a days....https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts+5:1-11

And just a side note:  not intimating that Anais and Sappirus are results of Pharissees but a definate result of being greedy and egocentric

Watchman,

Mark 2

Question of the Sabbath

23 And it happened that He was passing through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples began to make their way along while picking the heads of grain. 24 The Pharisees were saying to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” 25 And He *said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions became hungry; 26 how he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the [o]consecrated bread, which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests, and he also gave it to those who were with him?” 27 Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath [p]was made [q]for man, and not man [r]for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

"God instituted the Sabbath to benefit man by giving him a day to rest from his labors and to be a blessing to him.  The Pharisees turned it into a burden and made man a slave to their myriad of man-made regulations" -The Macarthur Study Bible.

Jesus is greater than the Sabbath, so based on HIS authority, He could reject the pharisaic regulations and restore God's original intention for the Sabbath, to be a blessing and not a burden.

I agree with Eric's question.  How do you propose that we should observe the Sabbath?  Do you agree that it is to be a blessing and not a burden?  No one is saying that the Sabbath should be ignored...absolutely not!  God has given it to us to rest.  Obedience is always in our best interest, and this is no different.

Love you too.

In Christ, Carla

Just to be correct in what you are saying is:  to not honor the sabbath and keep it holy?  Is that what you are saying to me by these verses??

Lo0king for some clarification.  Look at all Scripture regarding the Sabbath....it starts in Genesis.

Are you implying that I'm now a Pharisee?  The Sabbath is a blessing, always will be.  Erics question as to how to "observe" the Sabbath....please, the question posted initially was, "was it Sunday or Saturday", my initial posting was that it hasn't changed from the 7th day of the week. If you do not wish to celebrate the Sabbath, that is completely up to you.

My main concern was that it never changed from the last day of the week to the first.  If you have new and improved Scripture concerning this question, by all means, please post those Scriptural references that say that the Sabbath has been changed.  Also, please provide Scripture that the Sabbath is no longer to  be remembered or celebrated or that particular command is non existent.  And please.....do not call a person a pharisee for regarding the Word of the LORD.  People are flippant with that word when they don't like something...and to be honest it makes me concerned......Pharisees most definately applied manmade rules, but do not attribute that tNo God's Moral Law, i.e. the 10 Commandments.

My answer to these is the Sabbath is the Jewish Sabbath but not required to be adhered to under law because it is our faith in Jesus that calls us to worship Him at all times.

With my reasoning and Scripture posted in another response, I don't celebrate the Sabbath. I attend church to hear the Word from elders and to gather with fellow believers to strengthen one another. I attend every opportunity I can, and wherever church is available. IE: We don't have Wed. night service so I attend my former church on Wed. I attend special services at both. I have left one church and gone to another in the same day to hear sermons. I figure we can be out drinking, partying, sinning, etc., or even something as mundane as watching TV...or we can be in His presence where two or more are gathered.

I don't celebrate the Sabbath or Sunday or Wed. or any other day as a day of worship, but instead attend services every chance I get. My new church has Tues night services just to break the mold.

And if anyone's in the area, Aug 20-22 is revival and Sept 12 is Eddie James. http://www.canvaschurchwv.com Insert shameless plug here. LOL

BTW A Pharisee is a hypocrite. If you believe the Sabbath needs kept and you keep it, you're not being a hypocrite. But I have my reasons for believing I do not need to observe the Jewish Sabbath, as do others. It is as each one purposes in His heart.

A few thoughts...

Leviticus 16:34 “This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: Atonement is to be made once a year for all the sins of the Israelites.” And it was done, as the LORD commanded Moses.

Exodus 31:16,17 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath.....17 on It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.’ ”

Notice to whom the command/covenant is given. If one says those that accept Christ are Israelites, consider this...

Genesis 17:8 The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God.”

Exodus 20:10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns.

We do not possess Canaan, that is for the Israelites. There is a clear distinction that this is for Israel in that it adds the part about those residing in Israel.

Exodus 20:2 “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

We were not brought out of Egypt, the Israelites were.

James 2:8 If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right.  9 But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.  11 For he who said, “You shall not commit adultery,” also said, “You shall not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.  12 Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom

To love our neighbor is doing right. But if we're going to keep the law, we have to keep it all...perfectly. Since Jesus is the only sinless one, we can't keep the whole law perfectly. We are being judged by the law that gives freedom, not the one that keeps us bound.

Some say that the Sabbath was to be everlasting and not end after Jesus died. However that would mean we're also obligated to keep the law of circumcision and shew bread.

Exodus 31:16-17 The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant. 17 It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever

Leviticus 24:8 This bread is to be set out before the Lord Sabbath after Sabbath, on behalf of the Israelites, as a lasting covenant.

But to sum up the Sabbath...

Mark 2:27 Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

Leviticus 25:4 But in the seventh year the land is to have a year of sabbath rest, a sabbath to the Lord. Do not sow your fields or prune your vineyards. 5 Do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the grapes of your untended vines. The land is to have a year of rest.

The Sabbath was made for man (man needs rest) just as the land needs rest. This is why it is made for man.  This is why it doesn't have to be Saturday or Sunday. I can worship God Sunday through Friday and in no way is He going to say that since I didn't worship on Saturday that I don't belong to Him.

When the rich man came to Jesus and asked what good deed he had to do to have eternal life, Jesus replied:

Matthew 19:17-19...If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.” “Which ones?” he inquired. Jesus replied, “‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother, and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’

Jesus is making a point here which follows James 2:8 above...“Love your neighbor as yourself,” He says nothing of the Sabbath. He wants us to worship God with all our heart, not setting aside a specific day of following a law given to the Israelites. And He wants us to love one another. That's why Matthew 22:40 says "All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Colossians 2:16 (KJV)
16  Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

Of course...Look at the WHOLE OF SCRIPTURE JB, & not just pick and choose one verse out of the Bible to support your view.  Speaking of which, we should not pick and choose to support "our views", but to support the whole Scripture.  Please do that....and also why would God place that in His  Stone Tablets only to renege on the 4th commandment and cause so much confusion about whether or not it's still worthy to be followed.

Please read the Bible Scripture in context.  You cannot nitpick Scriptures.....Read the whole thing, it's important.

Hebrews 4:12--For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
