The Bible makes it clear that we are justified not by our works, not by our efforts, not by our deeds, but by faith – and by faith alone.
David,
What do you mean when you say 'justified'; what do you mean by the term 'works'; 'efforts'; 'deeds'...and...
I know I'm going to get cremed for this but....could you please show where in Sacred Scripture the Lord states that we are saved by faith alone?
Sharon.
You are going to get creamed??

I was reading an article by Maureen Callahan a few weeks ago in the New York Post about how Oprah Winfrey's weight problem is similar to the economic recession occurring in the United States today. The article stated the similarities of the problems of the economic recession based on Oprah's comments about her weight problems. ? I am embarrassed,? she said. ?All the money and all the fame and all the attention and the glamorous life and the success doesn?t mean one thing if you can?t control your own being. Oprah, best known for being the self-help new age philosophy, hits the heart of America?s recession problem today with her comment. America is one of the world's richest economies and yet it just can’t help itself from screwing up.
The author believes that a lot of those who were victims of the recession or are suffering from poverty rely too much on the self-help and new age philosophies that Oprah herself preaches on TV. To further quote the article: When you have a cycle of hope and aspiration not based on anything, you're due for a crash,? says Steve Salerno, author of SHAM: How the Self-Help Movement Made America Helpless.
I used that article to start my response to you because I believe that those who think their works are meritorious or add to their salvation are due for a Crash.
Romans 3:28: Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the works of the Law.
James 2:24: You see then that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.
Romans 5:9-10. Much more then, having been justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
Some believe that our salvation is past and future. So we are saved but we will be saved as well. I am not going to get into such an argument for now and only state that we are either saved or not saved.
Ephesians 2:8-9: For by grace are you saved through faith, and that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast
Cor. 5:10: For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ to receive the deeds done in the body, whether good or bad.
Rom. 2:6-7: [God] will repay every man according to his works. To those who seek after glory, honor, and immortality by patiently continuing to do good, [he will repay] eternal life.
Gal: 6:8-9: He that sows to the Spirit shall reap everlasting life from the Spirit. Let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due season we shall reap [eternal life], if we do not faint.
The above verses are not teaching that is by works and faith that we are saved, but rather that we will be rewarded by the works we do to bring God glory.
>>What do you mean when you say 'justified'
What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, has found? For if Abraham were justified by works, he has something in which to boast; but not before God. For what says the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Now to him that works is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. But to him that works not, but believes on him that justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Even as David also describes the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputes righteousness without works, Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. Comes this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness. How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision. And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also: And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised. For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his descendants, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. For if they who are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect: Because the law works wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression. Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the descendants; not to those only who are of the law, but to those also who are of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all, (As it is written, I have made you a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who gives life to the dead, and calls those things which are not as though they were. Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall your descendants be. And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body as now dead, when he was about a hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb: He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; Who was delivered for our offenses, and was raised again for our justification.
(Rom 4:1-25)
Love to you my sister and friend.
You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? 21 Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. 23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend. 24 You see that a person is justified by what he does and not by faith alone. 25 In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? 26 As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.
You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless?
The thing to understand here is the state of the question, for the dispute here is not in regards to the cause of justification, but only what avails a profession of faith without works and what opinion we are to form of it. one should not use these verses to teach that we are justified by works. James was not teaching such thing. I hear you saying prove it with the word my brother or are you saying prove it with the word knucklehead hahaha :) OK - ok James tells us that no faith or a dead faith is whithout works. We must ask the Lord's Spirit to enlighten us as we study the word and keep searching for the author's intent and the context in which the verse is coined.
21 Was not our ancestor Abraham considered righteous for what he did
Please do not be quick to yell victory if you are among those that believe that works partly justify us, when you read “was not Abraham justified/made righteous by what he did, but we must look at the whole chapter familia before we build our conclusions and make a deliberation as to what our beloved God is telling us through James. We have already said that James does not speak here of the cause of justification, or of the manner how men obtain righteousness, and this is plain for everyone I hope; but that his object was only to show that good works are always connected with faith; and, therefore, since he declares that Abraham was justified by works, he is speaking of the proof he gave of his justification.
Some place Paul’s theology at war against James’, but no such war exists. God’s inspired writing is infallible in its original languages and it does not contradict itself. When Paul says that we are justified by faith, he means no other thing than that by faith we are counted righteous before God. But James has quite another thing in view, even to show that he who professes that he has faith, must prove the reality of his faith by his works.
That we may not then fall into that false reasoning which has deceived many, we must take notice of the two fold meaning, of the word justified. Paul means by it the gratuitous imputation of righteousness before the tribunal of God; and James, the manifestation of righteousness by the conduct, and that before men, as we may gather from the preceding words, "Show to me thy faith," etc. In this sense we fully allow that man is justified by works.
What say you beloved?
