All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

Touchy subject, but a question often asked...do those who commit suicide go to heaven if they were saved?

Very recently my cousin's son committed suicide. This is a question that I've never known the answer to, but I always wanted to believe that a person who was saved yet could no longer bear living, would go to heaven.

However, reading this morning, something stood out to me.

1 Corinthians 3:16‭-‬17
Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for God’s temple is sacred, and you together are that temple.

This is clearly referring to the temple as the church. However...

1 Corinthians 6 17-19
But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit. 18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;

This clearly refers to our individual bodies.

So I'm wondering if the two are interchangeable. In both it is an individual sinning against and destroying the temple.

Like I said, I know it's touchy, but we need truth and can't skirt around it or sugar coat it without being accountable. So it's something I think we should all be aware of. Better to reach out quickly to a person in that situation or reconsider if it's ourselves, than risk the unthinkable.

I'm going to throw something out there:

Christ committed suicide. John 10:17-18 "The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life--only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father."

Most believe that suicide is always a sin deserving of hell. If suicide is always a sin, and Jesus was sinless, then Jesus must not have committed suicide. Right? However, He said in John that he laid down His life. No one took it from Him so He wasn't murdered. He could have called 10,000 angels to save Himself.

The act itself is not clearly prohibited. Almost all suicides are done from wrong motives, and thus are sinful, it is certainly possible that one could do so with entirely noble intentions. If one were to sacrifice oneself to save others, that seems to me to be moral, not sinful. And, of course, this is precicely what Jesus did in His death. You have martyrs, etc.

Just something to think about.

I don't see dying to save others as suicide. Suicide is taking your own life because of somewhat selfish reasons mostly. Be it either depression, shame, bullying, etc. But you're doing it to escape something. Saving others is sacrificing yourself out of love for others. And it's not like you pull the trigger. Like Christ laid down His life by not fleeing from the cross. He allowed it to save others but didn't nail Himself to the cross. Others did that.

As for actual suicide, I wouldn't want to receive the answer too late, if you know what I mean. According to the above verses it is possible they would be destroyed. It's something I'd feel needs pointed out to anyone considering it. Let them decide the truth of it. Rather than telling them God understands and might not punish them for it.

He said HE laid down His life. To me, that says it all but that's just my view of it.
