What does standing in the gap for someone literally mean?

Joe, I'm not sure what I said in my comment that makes you feel the need to re-make your point of view personally to me which you already stated above in another comment for everyone.

Thank you for the reminder ... Now what I said is that I believe there are many gaps in the lives of people and that's what I believe and I believe God will use people to help meet the needs of others. I am not asking anyone to believe what I believe. I am merely stating my POV about this topic.

Another good example is when my youngest sister's husband died and her young son was left fatherless and several men in their church stepped in to try to help fill the huge gap in his life that was there at that critical time as he grieved the loss of his dad... just to take him to an after school activity or something like his dad would have normally done when his mom wasn't able to do it, etc...
