Mischelle,

We all reach a place where our faith isn't strong enough to see us through and we need help standing. God speaks on a single cord being weaker than several cords wrapped together. We stand in the gap strengthening our brother or sister who is going through a weak spot. We encircle him or her to block Satan's attack. We allow our faith to sheild the weaker one.

"I looked for someone who might rebuild the wall of righteousness that guards the land. I searched for someone to stand in the gap in the wall so I wouldn't have to destroy the land, but I found no one. (Ezekial 22:30)

Who will stand in the gap? Who will rebuild the wall of righteousness that guards the land? Who is the answer? Jesus Christ. (Here am I, send me.)

Other verses to consider...

For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 3:11)

Then Jesus asked them, "Didn't you ever read this in the Scriptures? 'The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone. This is the LORD's doing, and it is wonderful to see.' (Matthew 21:42)

Jesus Christ rebuilt the wall of righteousness that guards the land. He stood in the gap. He is the mortar and bricks.

This is from from "Your Daily Word" website...The Lord is looking for people who can stand in the gap on behalf of this land.  Because of His accomplishments, we now stand in the gap.

And consider Isaiah 6:8...Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.

We can only find 1 place it the Word that the word GAP is used, only 1 place where

GAPS is used, Ex.22:30 and Ex.13:5, both are in the old testament.

But what it meant was to be an “intercessor” between man and God. The only one I can think of, other than a Priest under the old Testament law making sacrifices, would be Moses leading the Children of Israel out of Egypt.

Now in the New Testament, we only have one “mediator or intercessor“, between man and God, Jesus Christ the righteous.

Now an intercessor is a “mediator” 1 Timothy 2:5
For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

So now there is no gap between man and God; Jesus filled that gap. He alone made that

“sacrifice” intercession for us and we have access to God through Jesus Christ, our Advocate, Attorney, Mediator, High Priest and Intercessor, for mankind. Heb.7:25.

So without getting into various kinds of prayer, our intercession for others, is between the man and his infirmity or adversary. Not between man and God.

I have made this illustration before, but policemen, and  Attorneys, are considered intercessors; in that they stand between us and someone trying to rob us on the street etc. The attorney in the court room. They do not have to go to the constitution to get their approval to defend us, they have that authority to do so on their own.

So God the Father, through the person of the Holy Spirit, through the Living Word is living in us. He has given to us all things that pertain unto life and godliness through the knowledge of Him...... 2Pet.1:3. He has given to us, authority over all the works of the enemy, Lu.10:19. Ye shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover. Mk.16:18.

Acts 3:6-7, Peter and John did not have to fall on their knees and fast and pray and intercede for that man at the beautiful gate. They said, such as I have, give I thee, in the Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. and they released that man from an incurable paralysis. Now that is intercession between man and his infirmity through the Name of Jesus. He has given to us the use of His name, (I.e. in My Name shall ye cast out…..etc.

I don’t mean to confuse any one, my desire is to exhort, encourage and lift up and magnify the Name of Jesus, over all circumstances we find ourselves in. This is just what the Word is telling me.

Questions

#1.

Jesus is our one and only Mediator and Intercessor?

Between man and God? Yes! 1Tim.2:5

#2.

we do not need to intercede for others who are in situations that they need help from Jesus with?

I’m sorry Mischelle if I didn‘t make that clear, We do need to intercede for others, but we need to know how or what to intercede for. And what intercession is. It is not begging God to heal, deliver, or set that person free, that is our intercession, just as it was for Peter and John, at the gate beautiful. We use the Name of Jesus. It is His authority, 2Cor.4:6,7,……… that the Power may be of God and not of us…

When we encourage or comfort someone that needs a little loving, that is a form of intercession; between Peace and discouragement or discomfort.

For instance, it tells us in Isa.58:1,　Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and show my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.

This is also a form of intercession, by way of Teaching, Preaching.

The other intercession for us, is to use the Name of Jesus to loose the bands of wickedness, undo the heavy burdens, let the oppressed go free and that we break every yoke, to deal our bread to the hungry, bring the poor that are cast out into our house …….These are all intercessions that we do as children of God. One of our infirmities is; we don’t always know what to pray for, as Ro.8 says “as we aught” but praying in the Spirit will reveal to us what to pray for. “This is the way I read and understand Rom.8:26,27”

This is kind of like what Paul wrote about to the Romans 15:1: where he speaks about bearing the failings of the weak among us?"

In my opinion as well, yes!

You are correct in your explanation. I was thinking of the times that we help others pray for themselves when they don't have the strength to do it. I've often heard that called *standing in the gap*, as well.

Sorry, Michelle. I guess what I was referring to is a *hedge of protection* where we bind together under one common cause. The two things are closely related and I mixed the two up. Please forgive me.

All of our strengths and abilities come from God and the use of *in the Name of Christ*.

Well Yes, as long as we understand what the gap is and who closed it.

We just thank God for the written Word and the Holy Spirit who reveals it to us. This is to replace the risen Lord and savior, He said He would send us another comforter; the Holy Spirit who will be in us, That is the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead, the same one that will raise us up as well. we are to use the Word just as Jesus used it to defeat satan, He said “It is written” We say to the hurting, It is written…In My Name ye shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover, It is written….. In my name ye shall cast out devils etc. He sent His Word and healed them. It is written…. Forget not all His benefits who forgiveth all thine iniquities, who healeth all thy diseases, who delivered thy life from destruction and crowneth thee with loving kindness, and tender mercies, who satisfieth thy mouth with good things, that thy youth is renewed as the eagles…..It is written, God has not dealt with us after our sin nor rewarded us according to our iniquities…etc,etc…..

Yes we lift them up by the Word of God when they are weak.

Could you elaborate some on two items so that I can understand where you are coming from.

 

1) This is to replace the risen Lord and Savior.

2) To what extent do you believe we have been authorized by Jesus? A quick read of your comments almost gives the impression that you believe that we have been authorized to tell God what to do and He has to do it.

I think I have already written a book on this subject, trying to explain my position on this statement. But it got too wordy, so I thought I would try to condense it a little.

I know you know all this, it is just a reminder, for me as well.

Starting with the first man Adam, being created from the dust of the earth, and God breathed in his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul.

Now, Jesus was born of a woman “flesh” But the Spirit of God overshadowed Mary and she brought forth the second man, the Lord from heaven 1Cor.15:47,

As God breathed the breath of life in Adam, I believe He “God” or the Holy Spirit breathed on Mary, and she conceived and gave birth to the man Jesus. So God’s Spirit was in Him from the beginning. We understand that breath of air or breeze, is Spirit in the Word.

Other than God speaking to Moses and Abraham, there wasn’t much of a contact with man kind, before Jesus came.

Jesus was really the first contact that God made with man-kind. That is to man-kind corporately, not individually, as with Abraham and Moses.

So God visited man-kind for the first time after the fall of man. Through Jesus Christ. After the death, burial and resurrection, Jesus said, I will not leave you comfortless, I will come to you again, Jo.14:18, But He came back to us in the form of the Word, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. So actually He is still with us, in the person of the Holy Spirit, that is within us, not walking along side as Jesus did.

So this is why I said that the Word and the Holy Spirit is replacing the risen Lord. The old song we used to sing, “You ask me how I know He lives, He lives within my heart.”

This is the only way we can do the works that He did, but it is not us doing them, it is God in us, Jo.14:10, just as Jesus said in Jo.5:30 “by myself, I can do nothing, I judge only as I hear…” So it is with us, we can do nothing on our own, Our faith can never appropriate anything that God hasn’t already made provision for.

I like a couple of scripture in 2Cor.3:18 But all we with open faces, beholding as in a glass, the glory of the Lord, are changed into that same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. And 2Cor.4:6 for God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, has shined in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God, in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.

So we just do what God tells us to do in the Word, the laying on of hands, speaking to the mountains, sickness disease, etc. But it is not telling God to do anything, God has already given us everything we need. If it hasn’t already been done in the Spirit, we couldn’t have faith to bring it into reality, “our reality as we know it.”

LT. This is where so many Christians get so discouraged in their walk with the Lord. Because they don’t have a working knowledge of the Spirit, soul and body, so they are dominated by the senses rather than the Word of God. The Word hasn’t become a reality to them yet. A lot of them don’t understand the change that happened in their born again Spirits. When God said that old things passed away behold all things became new, so they will search their physical, emotional, and their mental realms for God’s power. If they can’t perceive it, then they must not have it

But the truth is, old things did pass away, and all things did become new, in their Spirit’s the moment they accepted the Lord, and were born again. Now everything we will ever need in our Christian life is already there, all we need to do is believe it and then release it. As Peter and John did at the gate beautiful, Peter said, such as I have give I thee. Every born again Christian can say the same thing that Peter said, if we will just believe it and not doubt in our heart. The reason most doubt it, is because they can’t see it with their five physical senses.

Thanks for replying. The primary reason I needed more information is that this site is primarily focused on seekers and new believers. Without expanding what you had said it could be very confusing to those reading your original post.

Mischelle,

 

The term as I have heard it usually includes "with you" at the end of the statement. It does not mean standing in some gap between the person and God as Joe pointed out, but is used to refer to praying for and with a person as they go through trials and tribulations. It is praying with them through a situation or times of growth. It is simply a way of letting them know that we are joined together with them in prayer and that we will not forget them. It is a statement of commitment that should be followed up with prayer for the person and the situation.  

 

Thus, though it can mean many different things to many different people, basically it is a statement of commitment to walk with the person through whatever they are going through, good or bad, in prayer, help and encouragement.

I was standing in the Gap yesterday--at the mall. I was praying, too. The store was very crowded and I was a nervous wreck. Does that count?

To me, standing in the gap for others means praying ... caring, supporting, visiting, ministering, comforting...

It's comforting to me when I know another believer in Christ counts me as a sister and as my brother/sister, just knowing they are praying for me... and also when I know I am really cared for ... it matters ... alot. So I try to do and be that for someone when I can. There are a lot of gaps in this life ... If you provide a meal for the homeless or help them find shelter or give someone a ride to work for however long it takes when their car breaks down and they can't afford to repair it right away ... There are alot of ways a person can fill in a gap in someone's life ... you know ...

That’s true, but did you notice that it is not between God and that Person? Your participation in their lives, by faith and compassion, is something OF God, but your intercession was between them and their need.

There was no gap between them and God. They themselves has the same access to the throne room as we, if they are born again.
