speaking in tongues
I have a question that has been on my mind a lot lately and I am
hoping that I can get some clarity on it. How important is it to be able
to speak in tongues and does the inability of someone not being able to
speak in tongues imply or mean that they aren't really christians ?
Please help

I don't wish to lower speaking in tongues. Because I speak in tongues. I believe 1 Corinthians 13 has a lot to say...
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
Whether or not you speak in tongues, live love.

thank you all for your replies and while i hear what you are saying,i still
have some more questions. What is the point of speaking in tongues exactly?
I heard that they are a way of speaking with God without the devil
comprehending what you are saying,but now my question:it is said that the
devil was 1 of the angels of God before he was cast down from heaven,so
is it not possible that he knows/understands the tongues? And also what can
i do to get/receive the gift of tongues because i really want to speak in tongues?

The Word said that speaking in tongues is a way of self-edification & instructs you to do it outside the view of others. I know that I know that I know that I'll get back-lash on this but most of the people that speak tongues in to be seen by others are almost always women. I'm not saying always but most of the time. I see it as a more prideful thing & not Spirit led in the least, the women doing it in the church that is. He says he would much rather you prophesy because that edifies the Lord. This is my belief. I hope no one sees this statement as being argumentative at all.

I would like to add that at one point in my walk, I asked the Lord for the gifts of tongue, not that we should ask for gifts. I wanted all of what the Spirit had for me. I didn't want anything to be left. I wanted ALL of Him & if that meant tongues, Hallelujah. However, when inquiring about it, He told me that I already spoke too much in English now as it was.

If you are truly interested,
Reading 1Cor.14:1-33, would be very beneficial for your understanding the gift of tongues.
You will also understand what is being taught in Rom.8:26-27.
