All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

All:

I am teaching on the Book of Judges to students in school. I have come to the story of Samson. Why do you think God anointed Samson when Samson was so weak with his morals? What does the Bible mean when it says the strength was in his hair? Was Samson's obedience to not cut his hair the real strength - the obedience to the covenant? Do you know another character in the Bible whose strength or gift was associated with a physical characteristic of his body?

I believe it was an act of war. There is so much evil in this world. Sometimes there are fatalities in the battle of good versus evil. He served God with his life even though he had been so weak with his morals. It is better to enter life maimed than not enter life at all. Samson is with his Lord.

Amen. His name is mentioned in Hebrews 11:32.

That is correct. Praise the Lord. We all have hope. Our name is in that book as well.

And isn't that exactly how the Islams feel other then 19 virgins? Just thinking......

Hi Brother Roy,

You've got a diffcult assignment here.

Sorry....I can't offer any help on Samson's hair situation.

But, maybe you can tie in similiar moral short-comings with a "man after God's own heart".......King David :

(1.) Adultery compounded with murder (2 Samuel, Chap. 11),

(2.)  Serious problems with his son, Absolom (2 Samuel, Chap.15)

(3.) After taking the forbidden census....70,000 Israelites died because of King David (2 Samuel,Chap. 24).

I guess we can sum it all up......we just can't/won't....fully understand God, and His ways...in this life.

Wish you the best in your endeavor, Bro (I don't believe in luck - good or bad).

Grace and Peace.

Thanks, Richard. I can't think of another supernatural gift of God tied in with a physical characteristic like long hair. There are many instances where physical characteristics are described but none that I can think of that ties in with a gift.

I watched a video upload on youtube that suggested that the moral of Samson's story was about foregoing his parent's council, and choosing a wife from amongst the philistines, and not from amongst the believers. Does anyone believe that marrying a non-believer invites suffering?

Yes, Manard, I do believe it invites trouble. God warned the Israelites many times about marrying outside of their faith. Those who today are married to an unbeliever so wish their spouse would come to a saving faith in Jesus. Probably the verse that would speak mostly to this issue is found in 2 Cor 6:14:

2 Co 6:14  Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? NIV

The Bible also tells us that we are bound to our husbands and wives forever. We are not to leave our spouse for this reason. However, if a spouse chooses to leave us because of our faith, we are to let them go. Today, of course, we have no choice in the matter.

We serve a wonderful Lord. God bless you.

I ditto Roy's reply

Samson was one who was created specifically with a job to do, like John the Baptist and Paul the Apostle and Jeremiah the Prophet and David the King.

You asked, "Why do you think God anointed Samson when Samson was so weak with his morals?"

Was Samson any weaker than normal, morally?
