All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

I am curious. How many of you take time to read the powerful words found in the old hymns of the faith? I'm not asking if you sing them, but do you ever just sit and read them, gleaning the meaning and wisdom found in so many. Some of the well-known saints of days gone by spent many hours reading their hymnals. In fact it was oft only second read to God's Word.

Hey There LT....Great thoughts....

I think many of them are written from the Psalms... For me personally they are good because anything put to music is easy to remember and helpful in memorizing scripture.

Perhaps people could post some of their personal favourites. One of my favourites is 'Amazing Grace'. I did not know what it meant before I was saved...BUT NOW! Whew! What a song indeed!

Amazing Grace

"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me....
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see.

T'was Grace that taught...
my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear...
the hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares...
we have already come.
T'was Grace that brought us safe thus far...
and Grace will lead us home.

The Lord has promised good to me...
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be...
as long as life endures.

When we've been here ten thousand years...
bright shining as the sun.
We've no less days to sing God's praise...
then when we've first begun.

"Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me....
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now, I see.

Now that I have experienced this Grace first hand, it really means something....It brings tears of Joy and Thankfulness each time I hear it... Praise God!

Love in Christ, Carla
awesome insight, so many favorite hymals hard to choose one but i will go with Blessed assurance, beautiful beautiful song

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!
O what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
born of his Spirit, washed in his blood.
Refrain:
This is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long;
this is my story, this is my song,
praising my Savior all the day long.

2. Perfect submission, perfect delight,
visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
angels descending bring from above
echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
(Refrain)

3. Perfect submission, all is at rest;
I in my Savior am happy and blest,
watching and waiting, looking above,
filled with his goodness, lost in his love.
Hi LT,

The is no doubt in my mind and the minds of millions..... Fanny Crosby beats all hymn writers hands down.

Although blinded by an illness at the age of 6 weeks, she never became bitter. One time a preacher sympathetically remarked, "I think it is a great pity that the Master did not give you sight when He showered so many other gifts upon you." She replied quickly, "Do you know that if at birth I had been able to make one petition, it would have been that I should be born blind?" "Why?" asked the surprised clergyman. "Because when I get to heaven, the first face that shall ever gladden my sight will be that of my Savior!"

On one Occasion a Pastor asked if she would write seven hymns for a special function they were going to hold at the end of the week.

Worried that she would not manage he went back the same afternoon to apologise. On his arrival he was astounded to hear that she had finished the seven hymns, with both music and words.
She was blind and could not write. She had the words and music in her mind and sang them to him as he sat and wrote them down himself. Later she sang the hymns to the choir and organist until they knew it themselves.

Fanny Crosby wrote over 9,000 hymns during her life time.

At the age of 95 Fanny Crosby passed on and on her grave there is a simple little headstone with the name "Aunt Fanny," and these words:

"Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine.
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine."
Ron...What a beautiful story, thank you for sharing it.

"Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine.
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine." Amen!
I have many favorites, but two stand out a little above the rest. The two are "To God Be the Glory" and "Victory in Jesus."

I have 3 hymnals, two are packed away. The one at my desk is the newest one and it does not have the song. I am not familiar with it, so I looked it up:

the title is "Unbounded Grace" by John E. Walvoord and Don Wyrtzen

1) Unbounded grace, it reached to me, When hope was gone from view; In my despair, Christ came to me, as He alone could do.

2) Grace was for me the only way my guild could find relief; My destiny was changed that day I reached out in belief.

3) God's grace does not on me depend, It's God who is my Stay; His love is offered without end, He walks with me each day.

4) The universe with joy will ring when grace has won the day; As all creation joins to sing, "Praise God who paid man's way!"

Lord Bless,

Ron what a beautiful story, I never knew the background behind the song, but she is an amazingly gifted woman, what a testament to the Good Lord we serve!!!
The Old Rugged Cross Hymn
On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suffering and shame;
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.

Refrain

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.

O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary.

Refrain

In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
A wondrous beauty I see,
For ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
To pardon and sanctify me.

Refrain

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true;
Its shame and reproach gladly bear;
Then He’ll call me some day to my home far away,
Where His glory forever I’ll share.

Refrain
