Who is the Holy Spirit?
What is His purpose?
How do we get Him?
How are we baptized by Him?
I would like us all to put our knowledge of the Holy Spirit together so that we can better understand Him.
He is an awesome part of our Christianity but do we really know Him?

Unfortunately there are *naysayers* in every topic. Therefore, I hope that those of you that have something to add will do exactly that. Let us hear from you. This isn't so much a debate as an information gathering for all of us.
Blessings...
Rita
What do you mean by "naysayers?" Please explain.
Lord Bless,
LT
In addition to the verses listed above is Acts 2 when 120 were fire baptized. Again in Acts 4 where Per and John prayed and were filled once again with the Spirit
2 When fthe day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like ga mighty rushing wind, and hit filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues ias of fire appeared to them and rested1 on each one of them. 4 And they were all jfilled with the Holy Spirit and began kto speak in other tongues las the Spirit gave them utterance.
Rita,
Are you asking about the fact that Jesus breathed on the disciples the Holy Spirit and yet on other verses Jesus tells the disciples to wait for the Holy Spirit?
In order to get a clear understanding of those events we must keep in mind that the world was in transition at that time. Under the Old Covenant the Holy Spirit would come upon the subject and then go. God (Jesus) gave the disciple an installment if you will and promise them the Holy Spirit would come and abide in them permanently.
Those verses are not teaching that the disciples were already saved and though they were already saved and Holy Spirit indwelt, they still needed and additional Holy Spirit Baptism. the reason they had to wait was because Jesus was still on Earth.
The reason why other Christians where baptized after they had been saved in the book of Acts, in some instances was because this was the beginning of the Church and the apostles needed to be present to authenticate the new group of believers. When the Samaritans, who were disliked by the Jews, received the gift of the Holy Spirit it was essential that the disciples could confirm that, so it could be obvious that God was making no distinctions upon who He saved. To make the biblical case of what I wrote, I would have to spend a bit of time getting all the verses that have to do with the issue together. I have done it in the past for my own personal growth and understanding. t's something we should all do as well, but I do not presently have the time to invest in such a task in a timely manner. So I encourage you to leave all preconcived notions or teachings aside and to ask God to lead you to the truth in this and other topics as it appears that you do. I am glad you are bring up such topics, these forums are a wonderful vehicle God has provided for all of us to learn.
Salvation and the gift of the Holy Spirit was now how it was always ment to be, for the whole world. For all the ones God would call.
37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”
that was funny hahaha God bless you beloved. Thanks for the laugh. Believe me I have really slow down in this forums drastically, time just doesn't permit me to do as in the past. So you are getting just a glimpse of how much I could share if time allowed. Aren't you thankful time doesn't permit me to hahaha hahaha
happy I got a chuckle there. I looked at Rita's question and saw a great opportunity for sharing. As I look through scripture I see Paul, Luke and John etc. doing just that sharing that which they have learned A ;ong list of quotes from The bible is great at times yet scripture is never ending and who is the Holy Spirit in our lives . One example I have in my life matches up with an example already given.
I had been invited to what was being called revival meetings. At the time I had just barely accepted the Christian teachings. What new Christian wouldn't be excited about revival and being (as my mind went) on the ground floor of such a thing. Wow the 1st. evening was somewhat interesting. The leader of these meetings was a great speaker. His knowledge of scripture seemed flawless. His energy was powerful and everything fell in place perfectly. You know the old saying to good to be true. Exactly. Afterwards a few freinds asked my opinion and why I did not understand but I did not like what I had heard or seen. Something wasn't right. Of course the freinds who had invited me to this exciting spirit (?) filled meeting thought my doubts were a result of my immaturaty and lack of understanding of the Holy Spirit. I didn't return to the meetings. My friends continued to go to them on a regular basis. As it turns out the whole thing was a big scam. One lady lost thousands of dollars and came very close to losing her marriage. Others had been taken for quite a ride as well and unfortunately the enemy got the result he looked for some left in disbelief. The only thing I can say about this experience is the Holy Spirit was (is) my guide my teacher in fact just what Jesus promised in John 14:26 my Advocate. Maturity in the Holy Spirit is an open heart to listen and learn. A process I believe will not ever end.
Who is The Holy Spirit I believe The Spirit of God
What is His Purpose He saved me from quite a mess (on several occasions) He guide and teaches.
How do we get Him My experience He gets us.
How are we baptized by Him I believe He fills us when we make our baptismal commitment. Then with an open heart we become more aware of His presence more in tune to His guidance and teaching.
Amanda,
I actually feel the moving of the Holy Spirit as I worship God. I would call that the filling. I am more aware of my spiritual surroundings and during the times where I am speaking about God, I know more, or realize more truth about Him. I seem to understand more. When I have sinned against God, I feel an emptiness within me. I think the Spirit stays quiet during this time and have Him but He isn't refreshing me as He was. When I repent, I feel Him but it's less than when I worship God. As I start to worship God again, Holy Spirit is all over me.
I don't know if this helps but this is what I go through. I long for the time when I don't displease God, when I don't sin against Him, when the presence of the Holy Spirit is felt all the time.
If what this evangelist says is true....worship of the Lord is what we need to do continually.
I hope we have more responses from members, relating what others say about the Holy Spirit.
Have a good night, Amanda. See you in the morning.
Blessings...
David,
Those verses are not teaching that the disciples were already saved and though they were already saved and Holy Spirit indwelt, they still needed and additional Holy Spirit Baptism. the reason they had to wait was because Jesus was still on Earth.
I choose not to agree with this statement because Christ was resurrected at the time He spoke this. You are saying that they are already saved. You are saying the Holy Spirit indwells us at salvation. You say they still needed additional Holy Spirit Baptism. That is what I actually said. Jesus not having ascended has little to do with it because He ascends shortly thereafter. The fact that He hadn't ascended didn't stop the theif on the cross from being saved.
As my *preconceived notions*.....I study the Word of God. The Holy Spirit leads me in this study. I choose not to drop what He is teaching me, so think I'll hang onto it. You say I am wrong yet you haven't exactly told me why I am wrong with information to refute what I think. What you have done is tell me I am wrong without showing me how I am wrong. That sounds like bias to me, but I could be wrong about that. At any rate I will discuss topics of the Bible with you, but until the Holy Spirit leads me to something different, I will continue to believe what I am learning.
I have nothing against you, David. However, I get a little concerned that you are trying to convince me that your way is the right way and I should *drop* what I believe. Although I can't blame you for stating your case, I am concerned that you aren't really proving it and showing me why I should believe as you do instead as I do. So therefore, my brother, we will have to agree to disagree.
Blessings,
Rita
