That is a good question, but you have to understand that we are not the judge to who gets to go to heaven and who does not get to go to heaven. The Bible, which is the word of the living God, clearly points out what he expects of a person so that they can make it to heaven. He says to follow him and lead the kind of life that Jesus did to your greatest ability. The entire reason that Jesus lived on Earth and died was so we would have an example to follow and be able to have a relationship with God through his son Jesus and other wise we would all perish. The road to heaven is very narrow and few will enter. Think about the days of Noah when his family of about 6 to 8 people were only able to enter the boat with 2 of each animal. God saved only a few people which is an example of the day to come- few people will find the right way and the rest will perish. Also, understand that our God is a very jealous God and wants and gets what he wants, we were created by him and for him. I hope this helps a little bit.

The responses for your question here keep popping into my email as I have also responded and am now following the thread.. :) I reread your question, and even though you have for now put this on the 'backburner' and praying about it, I just wanted to respond something else that is so very important.

This is your son's question:

He is good natured and does not lead a bad life. he basically follows the 10 caommandments in life. he feels he should not be punished if he is good. How can a person who has committed crimes his whole life and accept god in his life while in prison go to heaven and my son who has been good be banished to hell??

The 10 commandments can be found in Exodus and Dueteronomy. Dueteronomy 5:6-21
The first commandment is this:
1) “You shall have no other gods before me.” This command is against worshipping any god other than the one true God. All other gods are false gods. The things of this world can also be false gods, anything we put above of and/or in place of God is a false god. God wants to be first. As someone also mentioned, He is jealous FOR us.

Deu 4:24 The LORD your God is a devouring fire, a jealous God.

another example:
(6) “You shall not murder.” This is a command against the premeditated murder of another human being.

Mat 5:21 "You have heard that the law of Moses says, `Do not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.' [fn]

Mat 5:22 But I say, if you are angry with someone, [fn] you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, [fn] you are in danger of being brought before the high council. And if you curse someone, [fn] you are in danger of the fires of hell.


another example:
(7) “You shall not commit adultery.” This is a command against have sexual relations with anyone other than your spouse.

Mat 5:27 "You have heard that the law of Moses says, `Do not commit adultery.' [fn]
Mat 5:28 But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust in his eye has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

also, Jesus tells us this:
Jhn 16:9 The world's sin is unbelief in me.

John 3:16
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. This is Grace!

Why did God do this? Because He Loves us.
Does He love us because we are good? NO...He Loves us because He is good. He is Love. He is fair, Just, Merciful, Compassionate.

He came to us because we cannot find our way to Him. Every other world religious belief is about people trying to find their way to God... But all of their efforts are wasted. God has already done it. We are saved by faith. Good Works are simply living out our Love for Jesus and what He has done. I'm certain you know this already, but sometimes when we are dealing with close family members, it helps when we receive confirmation that what we know to be real ..is actually real and truth.
