Wikipedia is not a good source when doing serious research. It is opinions and editable. With that said I will make a couple of comments.
Most understand that the Bible does not call the fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil an apple. In fact, the Bible never calls the fruit anything except by the name of the tree from which it comes. This is normal ... apples come from apple trees, oranges from orange trees. The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil will produce fruit after its kind ... a unique fruit that is the Knowledge of Good and Evil fruit.
One can only dismiss the tree and the fruit, including the whole account, if they read it allegorically as listed above. Thus, here what one believes to be true in God's Word will be determined by the type of hermenuetics is applied. Is one reading it at face value or allegorically to name two. If you read it as face value it must be a singular tree with a specific fruit. If it is read allegorically it is open to all kinds of interpretations. Regardless of what one believes we know that there is one truth in the end ... God's truth.
I read it at face value, see the account as true with it describing one unique tree that produce a unique fruit after the tree from which it originates. There is only one of these trees, as there is only on Tree of Life, and no human outside of the Garden of Eden has seen the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.
I have heard the interpretation that the fruit was metaphorical which I thought was a bit out there.
Sounds like a pharmaceutical product that comes with a disclaimer that might sound something like this:
Taking this product will cause a revelation that you are nude, you will feel shame, your relationships will be altered and it will cause death. Other than that there are relatively few side affects.
