Wow - sorry to hear that someone in church actually said that, but as you know we are all in different maturity levels in our walk and hopefully God grants you an opportunity to graciously share some of the verses below.
Genesis 6:5
Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
Luke 9:47 And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a little child and set him by Him,
Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart
1 Corinthians 3:20
and again, “The LORD knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.”
God is Omniscient (all - knowing) - He knows everything.
The Gentlemen that made the statement that God does not know what is is our hearts used Genesis Ch. 22 verse 1 through 16. He explained that God had no ideal what was really in Abraham's heart. Therefore he ask him to offer his only son as a burnt offering to enable God to see what was true in his heart.
Please help me to understand this.
Thank you so, so much for letting us know where the miss understanding comes from. It is a great opportunity to meditate on the truth.
Genesis 22
Abraham Tested
1 Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!"
"Here I am," he replied.
It is actually the opposite of what this brother perceived by the testing of Abraham. The testing is to reveal our hearts to us and not so God can know what's in it.
I can see how we can be led to think that God's testing is for the purpose of disclosing what is in our hearts, so He can see what is in it.
However - that is not the case at all. The testing of our hearts is not for God, Who knows us better than we know ourselves, to get insight into our intentions, heart or mind.
The testing is so we can see what is in our hearts. God already knows what's in it. We may have a false perception of our strength/maturity and through the test, God discloses to us where we are at.
Example:
Just an example:
I have a PhD in theology and i am well verse in scripture and I even counsel others, so after many years of what seems to me to be a successful mature walk, God allows or takes me into a period of testing, for our faith must be tested (again so we can know where our need to mature is). I lose my job and find out one of my kids is hanging with the wrong crowd and to top it off my wife is diagnose with cancer.
Those are painful situations, a mature Christian at this point may cry and not understand why this is happening in detail, he may even get angry at God for a period of time, but His Hope is in the Lord and he cries out to Jesus sooner or later because by abiding in Christ and constant use of the word he/she has trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. They understand that God has the power to turn it all around for His Glory.
Now a person in the same scenario who does not abide in Christ as they should and hence are weak in faith. Will have to go through many pains before they overcome such challenges. But God has revealed to them their heart.
James 1
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
The testing has nothing to do with God trying to get insight into our hearts. Is so we can see our heart and find out where we are lacking and work on such area.
Hebrews 5:14 (New International Version)
14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
In the case of Abraham, I can imagine that the son of the promise had become almost an idol in his heart, and God who knows our heart needed to reap him off his heart. God wants to seat on the throne of our hearts so everything else can be prioritize correctly.
Debra, you are absolutely right, God does know everything and He is aware with everything that is in our hearts, this Psalm here is a good one to prove how much God know and what should our response be, just like king David said, Psalm 17:3 Thou hast proved mine heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me, and shalt find nothing; I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.
While God knows everything that is going on in our hearts and lives, He still wants us to ask Him, He wants to hear our voice, God wants a conversation with us, and yes He knows and still ask us to ask :)
Hi Debra :-)...here's a question for you. Do you ever experience a nagging sensation that what you are thinking or feeling is improper and that you should change your ideas quickly? God reads our hearts and constantly works at transforming us from the death perspective to His perspective.
Does anyone else know your deepest and most immediate thoughts all the time? Since no one else does, where else would that insight come from but of God? Naturally, we don’t oppose our own thoughts, because they are our own creation; thus, naturally we love our own thoughts. Spiritual conviction does not come from self-conflict as some nutty psychologists might have you believe, lol. At least, that is what I think about it.
7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."
Matthew 6:21
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 12:34
O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
God wants us to be physically protected, but He also wants our physical bodies totally submitted to His will. As it says in Romans 12:1 " Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your reasonable act of worship." God says this is our reasonable service, or the least that we can do.
God looks at the hearts of men. In Matthew 5:8 it says " Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God."
He looks at your most precious possesion. In Matthew 22:37-40 it says "...‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Jesus Himself said this. Would you rather take a mere humans thought then the thought of God himself in the flesh? God wants all of you, and that includes your most precious possesion: your heart.
Ss: The best way to describe the thing God did with Abraham is this: In James chapter 2 I believe it is, James says, faith without works is dead. God just wnted Abraham to put legs on his prayers.Abraham was justified by works, and not his faith only.
First, I want to say, Of course GOD knows what's in your heart. He knows everything. But in some places the OT is written as if things were unfolding before God with Him responding accordingly. Secondly, we should never forget that "It is God who works in us to will and to do according to His good pleasure." In other words, neither Abraham nor anyone else ever does anything good apart from the Grace of God..
There are some people who want to give God attributes that are like that of a human being. I guess this is because they don't really want to have anyone who can do something they themselves cannot do. They are looking for a chink in God's Armor, so to speak.
Abraham knew that both he and Issac would come down from the mountain and he said as much to those he left at the foot of the mountain.
I think many of the unsaved are unsaved because they can't see God as He really is. They are looking for God to falter as humans falter, and it doesn't happen.
God wants to be involved with us and show us where we are for our own welfare, not for His. When something bad happens, He wants us to trust Him, be He also wants us to see ourselves, to sort ourselves out, and be reminded to be lined up with the heart that He wants us to have. He also wants us to know He will never leave us or forsake us.
You might tell the pastor of your church what you heard and he might teach a sermon on seeing God with the strengths God possesses.
