All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

1 Timothy from 2 through 6 discusses Godliness, instructions on worship, those in authority, qualifications of deacons and pastors, etc.  In 6:3, Paul says:  These are the things you are to teach and insist on. If anyone teaches otherwise and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, they are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions and constant friction between people of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.

I began to wonder, are the discussions we tend to engage in here in keeping with this?  Seems we often get so sidetracked on whether a person is always saved, whether or not we claim we're healed, whether or not depression is of God or not, what to say to homosexuals, etc.  Mostly scripture tells us to proclaim the Gospel, which is proclaim Christ and what he's done for us.  All the rest is geared toward church members toward OTHER church members and not towards unbelievers.  We're to instruct one another in Godliness.  All the side issues then, are they unhealthy interests in controversies and quarrels?

Is this discussion?  LOL

"She even sent a PDF file showing all the various sacraments, the history of the church, the perpetual virginity of Mary, to whom they say they pray to, believing that she is sitting next to Jesus and making intercession for them. That she ‘Mary’ or her mother were exempt from the original sin. "

I know next to nothing of other religions, but you said they "believe" this of Mary. So how did such belief come about on something that is nowhere to be found in Scripture?

Hi Seek, because they have a different bible than we. To get the same information, we must read the same bible. They are limited as to which bibles they are permitted to read.

They claim that the protestants took out parts of the Old, and New testaments. Where they have, I think, 73 books in their bible, we have 66. Part of what they claim is, “Quote”  “the bible is the inspired, inerrant Word of God (written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit) We know this not because each book of the bible claims to be divinely inspired (most of them don’t) but because, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, they were determined to be inspired by the authority of Christ’s Church.

In (382 AD) Pope Damasus I, prompted by the bishops at the council of Rome, wrote a decree listed the present Old and New Testament cannon of 73 books. The council of Hippo (383 AD) also approved these 73 books. The bishops of the council of Carthage (397 AD) officially settled and declared that these 73 books were in fact, inspired, There were many other books that seemed to be inspired – like the Gospels of Peter and Thomas, or the letters of Barnabas and Clement, but these were not determined to be inspired by the Catholic Church.

About the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mary is a creature and not to be worshiped. She is to be honored, however, for God has honored her above all creatures, choosing her to be the mother of His son.

This could be pretty long, so I will add more as time goes on about their beliefs.

It gets pretty interesting though, to say the least.

I would appreciate it, if others who knows anything about the Catholic religion, would respond to this. Thanks and may God bless.

Well I'm unsure of the books that weren't included or how those who felt the Holy Spirit led them to decide which books were divinely inspired.  I do know however that we're warned to not take away or add to the Word.  But I did know of books that were not included in the Bible as we know it and that the Catholics had more books in theirs, and I've perused a bit of that information.  Yet even in those books, I saw nothing stating what they claim to believe about Mary.  That's why I question how they get a belief if it isn't written in their Bible or anywhere else.

I took a friend's disabled daughter, who was wheelchair bound, to Mass every Wednesday at noon for a year, and I learned quite a bit about the Catholic faith during that time, although I didn't partake of the emblems, but I participated in reciting the Lord's Prayer, singing hymns, and hearing the prayers.

Part of what they believe regarding honoring Mary, actually, they get from the same Bible we read, but they say they aren't worshipping Mary, just honoring her.

She is called the Queen Mother because Jesus is the King of kings and Mary was His human mother.

They base honoring her upon verses like "... then the king sat on his throne, and had a throne brought for the king's mother, and she sat on his right. Then she said, 'I have one small request to make of you, do not refuse me.' And the king said to her, 'Make your request, my mother, for I will not refuse you.'" [1 Kgs. 2:19-20]

They say that names of queen mothers are listed in the succession records of the kings of Judah (1 Kings and 2 Kings) because they deserve mentioning, and Mary especially deserves honor.

There's more to it, but I'm familiar with that part.

Gotquestions.org has a section answering Catholic questions. I found their resource as I researched Catholicism myself, back then, months before I ever joined AAG or was even aware of AAG. It was back in 2009 when I went to Mass on Wednesdays. My friends were very devout Catholics and still are. The link is http://www.gotquestions.org/Catholic-questions.html

Maybe that will help.

YIKES!  How do they take a passage that is clearly referring to Solomon and Bathsheba and make it about Jesus and Mary?

I can only speculate, When we exegete Scripture, one verse standing alone doesn't become a whole doctrine without considering the whole counsel of God.

It happens more than we realize.

That's all I'm going to say regarding the Catholic faith, since it's not the topic of your discussion and since there are others better able to answer the questions. I've shared what I know.

Ok, but you forced me to look up "exegete".

"The idea of discussing things is all a part of learning."

Without Holy Spirit opening eyes, ears, and hearts, it's just intellectual learning. We sow and water. God gives the increase. The kind of soil is very important, too.
Seek,
I often find myself asking, Is this really true? I pray and ask God. I read the bible, asking the Spirit to help me see, teach me. I tend to second guess myself and turn to others. Maybe we aren't really meant to turn so much to others. As you said, you backed off because you felt convicted. I wonder if that's what I'm feeling, too, and it is easy to take things personally and easy to perceive things that people say, even though they didn't really mean it that way, in the wrong way. It's like a lost cause in the end because people can't make us see anyway. It must come from God. God must reveal the spiritual things in a supernatural way to us. The problem is not discussing and getting in an argument. The problem is just that one isn't able to see and no one can make anyone see the things of God except God. What we must do is ask God. We must ask God to enlighten us and transform us from glory to glory, and then the bible will make sense, more and more. I get so confused when asking others anymore, anyway. I'm becoming more and more isolated from people. I just feel every aspect of my existence is pointless. :'(

I'm not sure if I felt a need to back off because of too much discussion on what I felt to be "trivial" matters of religion or if it was because I spent too much time online....perhaps the latter.  But I also know some things can simply be discussed to death and no one ever gets anywhere.  But I do question sometimes what I feel about scripture, which LT I believe mentioned is actually what we should do.  Because I know early on there were things I heard, before I'd read the Bible or understood any of it, that simply did not line up with Scripture.
