Hebrews 13:5-6. Why because it's such a comfort to know God is always there.

These verses are great to remember when facing a bad spirit. I put the words to memory because there may not be time to find your Bible. If you don't have verses committed to memory, a demon will realize that.

I can do all this through him who gives me strength. (Philippians 4:13)

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. (1 John 4:4)

Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. (1 John 3:2)

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:9-11)

I and the Father are one." (John 10:30)

Don't be intimidated in any way by your enemies. This will be a sign to them that they are going to be destroyed, but that you are going to be saved, even by God himself. (Philippians 1:28)

I like the last verse so much. When you stand strong and aren't intimidated, it is a sign to them of their destruction. But it is a sign to you of salvation by God himself. Beautiful verse.

Love and God bless,

Mary

John Piper memorizing scripture -

HOW DO YOU MEMORIZE SCRIPTURE?

It's a terrific idea and I highly recommend it.  It will boost your spiritual life.  Knowing the Bible and being able to recall verses will encourage and equip you, especially at those very times when you need God's wisdom most.  Start with those verses that are most meaningful to you.  Some of the verses I've memorized include Romans 3:23 and 6:23; 2 Timothy 3:16,17; and Philippians 4:13.

Memorizing scripture is not really any use if you don't understand what you're memorizing or know how to apply it.

Grazer - one assumes that if a person is committing to memorizing scripture is because they understand plainly the benefit. :)

That's a massive assumption David. Just because I know what something says, doesn't automatically equate to me knowing what it means or how to use it. The 2 are very seperate

Grazer,

I did not say they understand its meaning or how to use it. What I said was: "they understand plainly the benefit."

The word of God is the word of God and it does not come back void, I doubt any of us understands it fully. We are all learning, but we do understand that there is an immense benefit in memorizing scripture, even that scripture that we may not fully comprehend. So I disagree with you that memorizing scripture is not really of any use, if we don't understand what the scripture means. Nothing but good things comes from committing scripture to memory.

Nothing but good things comes from committing scripture to memory.

My experience has suggested to me that's not always the case, I've seen it do a lot of damage to people including me

Grazer,

What damage has committing scripture to memory done to you? Did it keep you from going to watch those actions films you like so much hahaha, did it damaged your flesh hahaha? Did it bring conviction? Beautiful, horrible conviction?

I am just kidding dude, but on the real, tell me what happened if you don't mind sharing. :)

All I can add to this Jenny is that I have a terrible time memorizing, so I don't.  But what I have found, I read.  And the more I read, the more things come back to memory without my actually trying to memorize.  I may not know where a scripture can be found, but I know it's there.

Jenny

In my opinion there is not much that is more important than memorizing scripture.  The reason I personally believe this is because I often find myself in places where I don't have my bible And I need to encourage myself with the promises of God.

Also , I have a very active imagination for someone my age and so many times my thoughts can be led to places where they have no business whatsoever being. When I find my mind drifting it is extremely helpful to have immediate access to God's word. Wether it be for encouraging or ( and more often it is) for self chastisement. And if I have the scriptures memorized I don't even have to stop(especially when I'm at work and cant stop to read) what I'm doing to reflect on the promises of God.

My favorite scripture passage is Hebrews 4 :12-16 . It is such a comfort to know that God knows and sees everything and invites us to His throne of grace at any time. It's also good to have this reminder to help me keep my thoughts where they need to be.

Ialso have to pray the 51st psalm a lot.  And 2 Corinthians 5:10  about " taking our thoughts captive into obedience to Christ". And the 19th Psalm( if I remember rightly) about letting the "words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart " be acceptable in the sight of the Lord.

God bless
