I heard this story once & loved it. I can't verify it nor do I even know what country they are referring to. When the soldiers went out to battle, they stood side by side, their shields interlocked with their neighbors. I picture church chairs that interlock. So, when the neighbor was tired or even hit, his neighbor was always their to help hold him up. I feel this is what standing in the gap means.
Galatians 6:2 Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
Are you so busy with your own conflicts & strife that you forget to carry your neighbors? Look around & you'll discover your life doesn't seem so bad after all.

I look around and see many people far worse off than I ... but that doesn't make me feel better. I feel for them on top of what I feel for myself.
True. Maybe I used the wrong choice of words there. I guess if I didn't have food & seen someone didn't have a house, I'd still feel bad I didn't have food. lolol. Maybe I should have said we see our blessings?
I know when my neice's 4 year old was injured in a housefire two years ago, and I went to Shriner's to see him and to help her learn how to care for him when he was able to come home and to support her and encourage her, when I saw him suffering and crying and so hurt, I felt an immense burden for him but at the same time it brought back many memories of my own childhood and terrible pain from it and my own crying that I did as a child and I was carrying his burden and my own as well then. That was hard.
