To baptize or immerse in or wash with water in token of purification from sin and spiritual pollution
Spiros Zodhiates, The Complete Word Study Dictionary: New Testament (Chattanooga, TN: AMG Publishers, 2000).
Point of clarification ... baptism does not save, only Jesus saves. Baptism has its place in God's work, but only Jesus saves.
A Big Amen on that LT.
Seems it is hard for some to get away from the Law and traditions.
Amen Stephen King. He is the One Who baptizes with the Spirit. Its all part of God's plan....never have I heard of it as a Law and Tradition.....I've always heard it to be a command of our precious LORD and SAVIOR.
The law and tradition part comes into play when we emphasize in any way that baptism saves or that we are saved by baptism or because of baptism. The emphasis must always remain on the Savior and from there we can understand that we have been commanded to do certain things, but none of the things are our salvation ... only Jesus is the Savior. The wording above is in error because it emphasizes (intended or not) that the baptism saves.
We do not do to become (work), but rather we do because we are (grace).
Lord Bless,
LT
Just for clarification purposes, please, we are saved by the Savior, correct, but we are also saved because He is indeed our LORD. If we believe that Jesus is the Savior but yet fail to believe Jesus is LORD will we still be saved?
According to His Word, that doesn't mesh, you cannot separate the two.
Mar 16:16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
In James 2:19--Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
So even the devils/demons believe there is one God.....but yet they do not choose to follow Him, they instead choose to war with Him.
We must believe that Jesus is LORD AND SAVIOR, we must follow Him, we must do His commands...the Word itself testifies that those who obey His commands are those that follow Him. Without sounding redundant, please tell me that you must not only believe but ACT. Because no where in the entire Bible does it say that it's okay to believe without following. Please read the sermon on the mount. Too many Scriptures to place, but obedience is a definite requirement of salvation. I have not found anything that displays salvation without, if there is, please, please, enlighten me.
There is no possibility of being saved without actions. Sorry....This is the truth.
If you believe He is Savior you will believe He is Lord, but whether you believe He is Lord or not He is still Lord over all and never surrenders His sovereignty, that applies to the whole of creation. Yet, He is Savior, but only to those who become children of God. All the rest are not saved, even though He is Savior and they await judgment.
Note: I never once said it was OK to believe without following, but the following follows belief. Only the transformed can truly please God and aspire to be holy we must, but that is because of who we have become as children of God and with the ability to to know God as His child.
Devils/demons is a deep subject to delve into, but will highlight three points related to James 2:19:
1. They knew God was God, they existed with Him and they rebelled. The closest man has come to this type of relationship was Adam and Eve. All the rest of mankind has been born under sin and need the Savior.
2. The devils/demons have no hope for there is no Savior for them.
3. The devils/demons and humans are different types of creation.
