All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

I am starting this discussion so that there is a clear understanding of how the bible addresses such issues.

Here are some places to start this discussion:
Isaiah 47:12
'Now use your magical charms!
Use the spells you have worked at all these years!
Maybe they will do you some good.
Maybe they can make someone afraid of you.
All the advice you receive has made you tired.
Where are all your astrologers,
those stargazers who make predictions each month?
Let them stand up and save you from what the future holds.

Daniel 2
One night during the second year of his reign,* Nebuchadnezzar had a dream that disturbed him so much that he couldn't sleep.1

2 He called in his magicians, enchanters, sorcerers, and astrologers,* and he demanded that they tell him what he had dreamed. As they stood before the king,2

3 he said, "I have had a dream that troubles me. Tell me what I dreamed, for I must know what it means."

4 Then the astrologers answered the king in Aramaic,* "Long live the king! Tell us the dream, and we will tell you what it means."3

5 But the king said to the astrologers, "I am serious about this. If you don't tell me what my dream was and what it means, you will be torn limb from limb, and your houses will be demolished into heaps of rubble!

6 But if you tell me what I dreamed and what the dream means, I will give you many wonderful gifts and honors. Just tell me the dream and what it means!"

7 They said again, "Please, Your Majesty. Tell us the dream, and we will tell you what it means."

8 The king replied, "I can see through your trick! You are trying to stall for time because you know I am serious about what I said.

9 If you don't tell me the dream, you will be condemned. You have conspired to tell me lies in hopes that something will change. But tell me the dream, and then I will know that you can tell me what it means."

10 The astrologers replied to the king, "There isn't a man alive who can tell Your Majesty his dream! And no king, however great and powerful, has ever asked such a thing of any magician, enchanter, or astrologer!

11 This is an impossible thing the king requires. No one except the gods can tell you your dream, and they do not live among people."

12 The king was furious when he heard this, and he sent out orders to execute all the wise men of Babylon.

13 And because of the king's decree, men were sent to find and kill Daniel and his friends.

14 When Arioch, the commander of the king's guard, came to kill them, Daniel handled the situation with wisdom and discretion.

15 He asked Arioch, "Why has the king issued such a harsh decree?" So Arioch told him all that had happened.

16 Daniel went at once to see the king and requested more time so he could tell the king what the dream meant.

17 Then Daniel went home and told his friends Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah what had happened.

18 He urged them to ask the God of heaven to show them his mercy by telling them the secret, so they would not be executed along with the other wise men of Babylon.

19 That night the secret was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven,

20 saying, "Praise the name of God forever and ever, for he alone has all wisdom and power.

21 He determines the course of world events; he removes kings and sets others on the throne. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the scholars.

22 He reveals deep and mysterious things and knows what lies hidden in darkness, though he himself is surrounded by light.

23 I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors, for you have given me wisdom and strength. You have told me what we asked of you and revealed to us what the king demanded."

24 Then Daniel went in to see Arioch, who had been ordered to execute the wise men of Babylon. Daniel said to him, "Don't kill the wise men. Take me to the king, and I will tell him the meaning of his dream."

25 Then Arioch quickly took Daniel to the king and said, "I have found one of the captives from Judah who will tell Your Majesty the meaning of your dream!"

26 The king said to Daniel (also known as Belteshazzar), "Is this true? Can you tell me what my dream was and what it means?"

27 Daniel replied, "There are no wise men, enchanters, magicians, or fortune-tellers who can tell the king such things.

28 But there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and he has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in the future. Now I will tell you your dream and the visions you saw as you lay on your bed.

How does this apply to our every day lives?
What practices should we partake in or not?

I personally do not participate in these types of things, I just felt the urging to bring this topic up.

Talking of Astronomy - this blew my socks of the other day.

This is a shorter promo:

It had me in tears and profusely praising our AWESOME GOD!
Linda Ruth, I own this.. it is amazing. I've watched it twice.. and I understood more the second time through it.. you've just reminded me to watch it again. Thanks sis. Blessings, Carla
To allow someone tell you the future, be it by reading the Palm of your hand or the tea leaves in your cup, is Satanic and can lead an innocent on a path riddled with regrets that was never intended. An Illustration follows:

When I was approximately 23 years of age and definitely not a Christian, I had tea with a girlfriend and a friend of hers whom I had just met for the first time.
When we had finished I told the friend - let's call here "June" - that I could read the Tea leaves in her cup for her. My Girlfriend who knew this was not true, went with the lie and said: "Yes! Yes! He is very good at it." I then went into the motions of all sorts of ways to hold, turn and place the cup with a whole lot of made up incantations. Poor June was convinced and couldn't wait for me to start as I peered into the cup and solemnly nodded or shook my head.
I then started to tell June who sat there wide eyed taking in all the "Waffle" I could think of. I can't remember what I told her, but suddenly she broke down in tears. She literally howled and nothing we said after that could console her. When I and my girlfriend told her it was just a game, that I really could not tell the future or read tea leaves.. She howled all the louder, shouting that what I had told her was absolutely true and that we were now lying in order to ease her pain. That what I had told her, only she knew and was terrified that others would find out. No apologies or anything I said after that was acceptable and she continued to cry all the louder. It took a long time after changing to different subjects and discussion before she calmed down. Finally I was relieved to see them go.

Even though, I was not a Christian, I knew then that I had been playing inside a world that I knew nothing about and discovering how dangerous that world could become. I never saw "June" again and have no idea what actions she took on my "advice" over a cup of tea leaves.
On becoming a Christian I have asked for forgiveness and still regret to this day what actions it may have caused June to take.
The devil had, had his day. Don't be smart and tempt him.

Hello family,

I wanted to add a part of my testimony to this discussion.

Over the last year, I battled a severe “astrology addiction” to horoscopes, tarot cards and psychic readings. For those of you unfamiliar with the term, it refers to a state where a human being is unable to function or make major decisions without looking up what the cards/stars etc. have to say. It began with the innocent habit of reading my horoscope online to a point where I began to spend hundreds of dollars on e-psychic networks and astrology sites. I didn’t even realize when the habit became a crutch and I began to justify things in my life with “It is my fate" "It is written in the cards/stars" "It is pre-ordained, I couldn't help it". I don’t even know how I let myself spiral out of control to the extent that I woke up every morning, turned on my laptop, and spent HOURS online on hundreds of websites ‘checking my future’. I was in graduate school that time – my grades suffered, my thesis suffered, my social life suffered, my finances suffered, and at the same time I kept turning to astrology to find out what I needed to do to fix things. To this day, I remember the manic intensity with which I emailed/called/faxed astrologers/psychics for personal forecasts and personal counseling, which increasingly spiraled out of control when things did not go my way. Today, when I reflect on those months of torment I went through, I realize I literally gave the devil an open invitation to ruin me and drag me to hell. When things didn’t go according to my readings, I had horrific nightmares about my life that I never ever want to relive again.

How am I a sane person today? Christ brought me through. He did for me something that no medical treatment/shrink/counseling etc. could do. After a few days during my walk with Christ, I woke up one morning with the desire to look at my daily horoscope gone - and anything else related to future telling. I cannot describe that feeling – like a weight had been taken off, like I just didn’t need to read that nonsense anymore, like I was simply immune to its lure. And then a gradual realization that as long as I am in Christ, my future is in His hands, only He knows what He has planned for me, so why on earth did I need to depend on anything else? I am alive today because of Him, because He pulled me out from a pit and walked me away from Hell. He is awesome, He is my savior, He is powerful, He is love, and He holds my life together today. I am so glad to be his child.
Does God want us to partake in these activities? NO, HE DOES NOT. I realize my case was very extreme, but otherwise too, why should we need to depend on new age fads when as Christians, our futures are safe with Him? I was an absolute fool and the devil really had his way with me. I am so grateful that I am a new person in Christ today, that I can finally walk with Him, and learn to trust in Him as the guide of my life.
Hi Aditi,
Thank you for your testimony. I am sure that it will be a help to anyone who "fiddles" with Tarot cards, horoscopes etc.

Blessings

Aditi thank you for making my day brighter. Hallelujah to our King. It is always so good to hear what He has done and what He is doing in our family’s lives. Thank you so much for sharing beloved.

We know in part what the future holds for us, Glory beyond what we deserve or can imagine and for the parts of our future that we don't know about, girl we Know Who Holds the Futures in the Palm of His Hand. Amen - Amen!
Aditi,

This is an incredible testimony. Thank you so much for sharing it here for the Glory of our King. Praise Him Indeed.

Love and Blessings in Christ, Carla

I don't think you meant astronomy. Astrology and astronomy are entirely different. Astronomy is science based with a long history of fact based discovery; astrology is hocum that simply states that the position of celestial bodies exert an influence on one's character. Fact, your home has a higher gravitational and electromagnetic influence on you than all the stars in the heavens. As for any other influences, they are not specified by astrologers. Like I said, hocum.

The Pope has his own astronomer, and telescope. That should answer that, eh?
