All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

We are losing the power of words and their deeper understanding. In many circles today we are being told to stop using some terms that have been associated with Christianity that help define our understanding regarding Biblical truth. The argument that is offered is that these terms turn people off, or that they do not understand them. (For clarity, when I said “power” we are not talking life changing power, that is Jesus’ work. I am talking the power to communicate effectively and clearly).

If they do not understand these words, then teach them the depth of the meaning of the term. If it turns them off, then they are rejecting the truths regarding Jesus and His work in our life. When will we stop trying to reinvent the wheel?

I wonder? If we walk like the world, talk like the world, think like the world and act like the world are we not of the world? Are we not called to be different? Some will say that I do not need to know these words. If you want to walk in your Christian faith, you may not need to know the word (though I think you should) you better understand what they mean. These relate to the basic principles of life in Christ.

Here are some of the words I refer to. Take a minute and look at the list and see if you know what they mean, or have you been missing the beauty found in these terms:

Repentance
Justification
Regeneration
Salvation
Sanctification
The Blood of Christ (Not listed in all dictionary)
Sin
Judgment
Discipline (see Chastisement)
Redemption
Substitutionary Sacrifice (Not listed in all dictionary)
Righteousness
Holiness
Incarnation
Apocalypse

There are other words, but this is a quick list I came up with. I purposely did not define them here. Find a good Bible dictionary and research them and be blessed by what you learn if you are unfamiliar with these terms. And, oh yeah, don’t skip over the Scripture verses that the Bible dictionary will use to substantiate what they mean. Go to God’s Word and see what the Bible says regarding these issues. Jewels discovered are better than the ones handed to you on a platter.

Comments are welcomed. If you research it, share what you learn. If you agree with me regarding give a Hoo Rah. If you don't agree, explain why.

Lord Bless,
LT

Stacey,

Terms can have a slightly different meaning depending on one’s background, but they will have a common thread. The following is in response to your question.

Repentance: Repentance is often defined as turning from sin and turning to God. This is accurate, but only partially complete. The Greek word means to have a change of mind. Repentance begins with how we think regarding sin. This new way of viewing sin leads us to change our ways, but it all starts in the mind. The goal is to agree with God. (2 Cor. 7:8-11 & 2 Tim. 2:25)

Justification: Justification is a judicial act of God that pronounces us a free of guilt. This occurs when we accept Christ as our Savior. His blood covers the debt we owed and releases us from that debt, guilt and penalty caused by our sins. (Rom. 5:16-18)

Regeneration: This deals with being changed from our old self and made new and fresh in Christ. To be born-again. (Mat. 19:28, John 3, Titus 3:5 and 2 Cor. 5:17)

Salvation: This term expresses our change in position and relationship. We were destined to hell, but now are joined with Christ. We once were apart from God, now we are His child through Christ. As in the days of Noah all but eight perished. They were saved because they were found in the ark sealed by God. We are now saved because we are found in Christ and sealed by the Holy Spirit. (Titus 2:11-14, 1 Thess. 5:9, Eph. 1:13-14, John 10:9, Rom. 5:9-12 and 1 Cor. 1:18)

Sanctification: This term varies based upon one’s background. Where I come from it means to be set apart from sin and set apart to God, while at the same time being filled with the Holy Spirit. He comes to empower us to live for Christ and to fulfill God’s plan for our lives. (John 17:19, Acts 26:18, Romans 15:16, 1 Cor. 6:11, 1 Pe. 1:2 and 1 Thess 4:3)

The Blood of Christ (Not listed in all dictionary): The only payment acceptable to the Father to pay for our sins. The sinless God/man (full God and full man) lived the sinless life that fulfilled the Law that enabled Him to be acceptable as the sacrifice required for our forgiveness. (Rom. 3:25, Rom. 5:9, Eph. 1:7, Eph. 2:13, Col. 1:20 and Hebrews 9:14)

Sin: Anything against God. (Verses: too many to list)

Judgment: Judicial act of determining guilt or reward. (1 Pe. 4:17-18 and Hebrews 9:27-28)

Discipline (see Chastisement): The word literally means to bend one’s life in a way that it conforms to God’s. Discipline comes in many forms, but is always meted out because of love. For the believer it is not so much punitive as corrective in nature. (Heb. 12)

Redemption: To purchase back something that has been lost or stolen. The act of redeeming. Mankind was created by God for God and due to Adam’s sin was lost. God has provided redemption, purchasing us back to Himself, through the work of Jesus Christ. (Heb. 9:12, Col. 1:13-14, Eph. 1:7-14)

Substitutionary Sacrifice (Not listed in all dictionary): Jesus went to the cross not only to pay for sin (generically), but for each person who will come to Him in repentance and receive salvation personally. He took my sin upon the cross and hung there in my place. (1 Pe. 3:18, 2 Cor. 5:14-15)

Righteousness: The basic understanding of this term is a “right relationship” or “rightness with God.” God always acts righteously toward man. His actions towards the believer and the unbeliever are always right. Man on the other hand does not always act right towards God or each other. When God proclaimed that Noah was a righteous man (Gen. 6:9) He proclaimed that Noah’s relationship towards God was right, not perfect, not holy, but right. The unbeliever never acts right towards God as they cannot have a right relationship with the one in whom they do not believe in. This term also carries the idea of holy at times in Scripture. (James 2:23)

Holiness: The basic idea is perfection without blemish.. Holy is not something that is common, but sacred. Because of the fall creation became unholy and can only become holy again through the work of God on behalf of man and creation. (Rom. 6:22-23)

Incarnation: God Jesus became flesh without becoming less God or being less man. (John 1:14)

Apocalypse: The word means “revelation” or “unveiling.” Often this term is used to describe the end times. (The Book of Revelation)

Hi LT,

Thank you for reminding me of the terms you have listed.

I agree that as one hears these terms from the Pulpit, they leave a deeper appreciation of what has been said.

Simply reading your defintions raised my Spirit and found myself blessing God for what He accomplished for us through Jesus Christ. "I have been sanctified" has so much more meaning than, "I have been cleansed"

I would recommend that those who find themselves unfamiliar with certain terms, to study the ones they dont know. A good drill would be to give a Christian friend the answers and have yourself tested.
Once one gets to know all these wonderful terms, then keep them in your heart and feel a thrill as you hear them from the Pulpit.

BUT! I must add this, which I feel is important. Because of our understanding of these terms and because they begin to mean so much more in our daily walk, we are inclined, as time goes on, to use them when talking to others.

Because these terms have such a wonderful depth of meaning and once you fully understand them, you may find it dificult to"speak plainly" when witnessing to others. Those who are not Born Again or have very little to do with the church, will be switched off, when we unintentionally use them to explain our faith.

Therefore we must be on our guard when speaking to others, that we use plain terminology which listeners will easily understand and not be "Spooked" by our words. Your listeners may possibly be relieved to get away, rather than be enamoured with Christ. Their comments to their friends may well be: "Don't talk to that "Gook""
I am sure that all of us have experienced this rejection and it may be a good idea to look at our language for the cause of this rejection. "Keep it plain, Jane" Remember that "Such are the vicissitudes of this our sublunary existence!" SImply means: "Such is life"

The Lord Bless us all.
Ron
Ron,

Good points. The words are to be taught in the proper setting for the benefit of the growing believer and not tossed around to confuse the seeker, or even belittle others. Again, good point.

Lord Bless,
LT
